Melanie performed at my son's elementary school for Black History Month and was pleasant from the first communication of booking through her performance and on. She is an amazing violinist, and has a beautiful personality. I hope to hire her again in the future.

The violin brings an amazing sense of balance and purpose to Melanie’s life. Having played violin when she was younger, she always had the dream of resuming her practice. In 2020, she discovered Levine School of Music and enrolled in private lessons, providing the opportunity to perform in recitals and juries. She even joined Levine’s Adult String Ensemble.
She recently performed “We Shall Overcome” at the DC Black History Celebration Committee’s
Black History Kick-Off held at Westminster Presbyterian Church and at the Thelma D. Jones Breast Cancer Fund’s Annual Black History Month Celebration. She performed for the Southwest Neighborhood Assembly Black History Program on Monday, February 26, 2024, at 7 pm at Arena Stage.
She is also the owner of Melanie Bates Consulting, LLC, a strategic policy and communications firm with an overall focus on criminal justice reform. She is a Past President of the Greater Washington Area Chapter of the Women’s Lawyers Division of the National Bar Association (GWAC). Under her leadership, GWAC was awarded Affiliate Chapter of the Year. She currently serves as a Councilmember for the American Bar Association Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice.
Melanie earned a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Hampton University and a Juris Doctor from North Carolina Central University School of Law.
