Al-hambra Tribal Dance is an award-winning improvisational belly dance troupe performing American Tribal Style belly dance. Dancers carefully craft performances to fit any request: festivals, ceremonies, weddings, baby showers, faires, fundraisers, benefits, and private events. Performances are always family-friendly, colorful, and perfect for adding mystery, artistry and joy to your special event.
When my niece had her baby shower, we asked around for some belly dancers and our friend Suzanne recommended Alhambra Tribal. They came to our house and performed the most beautiful show right in the foyer of our home. I remember they even dressed in pinks and blues because we didn't know if it was a boy or a girl!
Response from Al-hambra Tribal Dance:
Thank you for the review, Ms. Gonzalez, and congratulations on being a grandma! Best to you and Paloma!
This troupe performed at my daughter's wedding and did a simply stunning show with lots of variety. Lee Ann asked about the guests and what kinds of things they might like, and she arranged a show that the whole party loved. We were all enthralled and would definitely hire them again.
The group had been performing at the World Veg*n Festival at the SF County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park for the last five years. They really draw a big crowd with their colorful costumes, tribal belly dancing, graceful movements and tribal music. Their performance appeals to our audience of all ages, adults and children. Brave ! Ole !

Gig Length: 5 - 30 minutes
Languages: English
Performance length:
Al-hambra Tribal Dance can perform single or multiple sets of mesmerizing and riveting dance performance ranging in length from 5 minutes to 30 minutes. Most performances are single sets of a length between 10 and 15 minutes.
Performance nature:
Our troupe is elaborately costumed in a glamorous, family-appropriate style that evokes cultures along the Silk Route. We are modestly covered and heavily bejeweled with full skirts that extend when we spin. Many of our dancers sport exotic tattoos; if your needs require us to be completely covered, we can dress accordingly.
We play metal finger cymbals and occasionally incorporate props such as swords, scimitars, or baskets.
Our dance can vary between slow and dramatic to fast and energetic with moves borrowed from Flamenco, North African dance, Middle Eastern Dance, and Indian Kathak dance. Performances can be tailored to a certain degree to reflect a ceremonious mood, a festive celebration, a reverent ritual, a mystical journey, a celebratory gathering, or a sassy show. Music ranges from traditional Middle Eastern music to modern club beats; care is taken to craft music sets to fit the performance request.
Tips are welcome, but are not commonly solicited during the performance; if tipping is appropriate for the setting, our dancers only gather tips into baskets or receptacles, never on the body.
Who We Are:
Al-hambra Tribal Dance is a female dance troupe dedicated to the performance of American Tribal Style belly dance. This style of dance evokes the old world, but is actually a modern phenomenon that, like America itself, borrows elements from different cultural styles. Our dance has the ability to bridge the gap between ancient and modern, and has broad appeal among young and old and various ethnic backgrounds.
Length of performance and client expectations:
Most performance sets are a length of 10-15 minutes; longer or multiple sets will be negotiated. Al-hambra Tribal Dance does a limited number of benefit events per year, so please inquire. Client is expected to provide parking assistance and a "green room" location (i.e., an office or store room) for pre-event preparation and belongings security during the performance.
Additional requests:
Do you have a gung-ho group that wants to try to belly dance? Do you have a guest of honor who might want to try to shimmy? We can accommodate such requests, but prefer to know about it ahead of time for the purpose of preparing.
Our Promise:
Al-hambra Tribal Dance is wholly dedicated to our art and we will take the utmost care in crafting our performance for your event. We are certain you will love what we do!
Performance space and sound requirements:
The troupe typically comprises 2-4 dancers who can dance in aisles between tables, full stages, corners of rooms, or in the round. We have danced on patios, in hospital halls, in cafes, on sidewalks, in gymnasiums, and on 40-foot stages.
Tips:
Consider the sightlines of your audience, especially those seated or standing at the back. Raised stages, or a buffer zone between audience and dancers sometimes aids visibility. Please specify the surface the dancers are to dance on, as this will affect the type of footwear we must bring. We can dance on wood, concrete/tile, asphalt, carpet, or open earth.
Please specify the sound system and ensure that it will be able to project the sound clearly to the room, but most of all, back to the dancers. Remember that we play metal finger cymbals, so check that your event is not constrained by sound ordinances. If you do not have a sound system, we have a portable P.A. system that we can bring. Please also specify how music shall be delivered and who is running the music. We are accustomed to bringing our music on mp3 player or CD, or bringing a live drummer.
If your audience has hearing issues (i.e. seniors with hearing aids), please inform us so that we can choose music that is most agreeable with such devices.
Music can include authentic folkloric music from Egypt, Persia, Turkey, or other cultures, folkloric arrangements, modern Middle Eastern or Eastern-influenced music with synthesized elements, pop music of various cultures, and live drumming. Due to the improvisational nature of our dance, on-the-spot requests can be difficult. If you have music you would like to hear, please suggest it and we can review it to see if it is possible to interpret it with our dance.
