Potts & Pans is one of the only all steelpan bands in Illinois. If you are looking for a steelband, look no further. Along with having a full 10 piece band, we are also able to provide smaller groups or a soloist to suit your budget and size constraints. Potts & Pans loves to hear requests from our hosts, it helps us build our repertoire. Currently we play pieces from american pop, european classical, jazz, soca, calypso, and more! Want to hear your favorite song adapted for steelpan, just ask. Don't settle for those bands with 1 or 2 steelpans along with guitars and basses. Those aren't steelbands, and they can't provide the type of impact that a full steelband can.
We are nothing short of impressed from the response time of our initial inquiry about a wedding soloist to the communication following the ceremony. Matt was the pan soloist at our wedding. He contacted us directly to make sure he knew exactly what we wanted for our ceremony. He played background music when guests arrived, attendant entrance music, bridal entrance music, unity candle music, and exit music for the bridal party and guests. We depended on him to give everyone musical cues to move from one part of the ceremony to the next. He could not have been more flawless. He also accommodated our requests to change and add musical selections less than two weeks before our wedding and confirmed our final choices.
Matt was punctual, friendly, professional, and flexible. Apart from that, he is an amazing musician!
We highly recommend Potts and Pans and thank them for helping making our wedding day memorable.
Response from Potts & Pans Steelband:
Thanks Steve and Amy!
It was truly a pleasure to be a part of your special day. Congratulations and I hope that we will see each other again in the future.
Matt
We have had Anthony from Potts and Pans at our events for the past few years and he always manages to help make our event a success! This band sounds awesome and is so accommodating to what we want and need. You cant go wrong with Potts and Pans.
I can not stress enough how fantastic and professional this band was. We hired them for our wedding and they did an excellent job. My family is from Trinidad and Tobago. The home of steelpan. My uncle has his own steelpan band and thought they were great. Matt Potts was able to work with my budget. His team LEARNED the songs I gave them. (That was such a treat). He played new soca songs at my wedding where my Trini family flew into the states for this. They all were amazed and surprised with the quality. It has been the talk of the town since! They come in on an awesome school bus and wrote our names on it. Those little details are what make Potts and Pans Steelband so special. I can not recommend them enough. Stop your search and call Matt to figure out how you can book him and his team.
Response from Potts & Pans Steelband:
Thanks Tiffany! It is always an honor to represent Trini culture, especially at such an important day like your wedding was. I'm glad you liked our bus too!
Anthony did an amazing job at our luau party. We had about 80 guests and wanted to provide live music. The steel drum was perfect! Anthony called me ahead of time to go over details and even what color theme we had to make sure be fit in! His music was relavant to the party theme and the attendees. I highly recommend them!
Thank you Anthony for a great experience.
He was very attentive to our requests, and anything we needed.
Very professional and a joy to work with. The music was a fun addition to our island party.
Just wish the weather did not downpour. We had to set up in the screen porch.
From start to finish, working with Potts and Pans was excellent! Very professional. Asked all the right questions prior to the event to make sure they would deliver - and they did! Anthony came early to set-up, checked in before, during and after to make sure everything was going well. Guests loved all the song selections and were so impressed! Got everyone into the Hawaiian themed mood!
Potts and Pans was awesome at our event. I heard a lot of comments about how good the performer was and how much people enjoyed the music. When booking the performance, Matt Potts was very up front and helpful. He worked with our budget and was able to tailor the performance to our needs. The performing artist arrived early and was set up and ready to start on time. He was professional and easy to work with. I would highly recommend Potts and Pans if you are looking for music entertainment for your event.
The Potts & Pans gang was simply amazing. They helped make our corporate event something that everybody in the office will remember for years. Their professionalism was unparalleled, and it was incredible for them to stay flexible when we had to move the date of the gig at the 11th hour.
This review is long overdue. First let me say, Potts and Pans are PHENOMENAL:) My husband is Haitian and I’m Trinidadian and from the moment we got engaged, I knew I wanted a ‘panman’ at our wedding. We hired Matt, Christina and Anthony to play during our wedding ceremony and cocktail hour and I’m sooooo happy that we did. They had our wedding guests singing and hyped up for the reception, and they even got the older folks (like my parents and the in laws) dancing which was awesome!! I could hear the singing and the music from the ceremony room while the hubby and I took pics and wanted to hustle so I could get some food and join the party:) Throughout our wedding preparations, there was never a time where we were worried about what Matt and his team would perform for us. After we heard them play Lucy and Happiest man alive at our initial meeting, it definitely sealed the deal for us. Our wedding guests were mostly young 20-30something Caribbean people, and the only requirement for Matt and his team was that the music be recent, festive and recognizable to our guests (translation: plenty soca and calypso….lol) which it was. It was really great working with Potts and Pans, and Roby and I couldn’t be happier with choosing them as one of our wedding vendors!!! Money well spent
On Monday December 5th, 2016, Anthony Jay Houston performed at Franklin Monroe Schools for all students in grades 7 and 8. He provided a mixture of vibraphone and steel pan music for the students, and taught them a brief history of each instrument. Houston engaged the students throughout the assembly, keeping their attention and entertaining them while educating them about the instruments. It was an outstanding assembly for the students and I would whole heartedly recommend both Anthony Jay Houston and the entire Potts and Pan Steelband organization.
I was blown away by the custom arrangement and the original piece that were put together for my wedding ceremony. They were beautiful and brought us all to tears! Anthony J. Houston did an amazing job communicating with us in throughout the planning process. He played the vibraphone beautifully and the ceremony and then kept the party going at the reception as well.
Great job! would definitely hire again and recommend to anyone.
Matt Potts of PottsandPans steel pan totally stole the show at my wedding reception! It was the most unique thing I had there to tie in my Trinidadian roots and my friends and family loved it! Only wish I booked them for a longer period. His communication skills, attentiveness and overall pride in what he does went above and beyond. I can't wait to book them for another family event!
We had a great event last weekend, that included Matt Potts of Potts and Pans. He added a lot of fun and some great ambiance to a fabulous evening of food and fun!
Response from Potts & Pans Steelband:
Thanks Kathy, the party was fun and your food was amazing!
Emily played our luau/40th birthday at our house. She did a great job, the guests loved it and I would hire Potts & Pans again.
I hired Matt and his team to play during our wedding ceremony and reception at an outdoor venue. From working with Matt over the past year, I had no doubt in my mind that things wouldn't be prefect. Everyone loved the music and things just flowed. I would ask him to play for any other event in a heartbeat!!
Response from Potts & Pans Steelband:
Thanks Heidi,
It was a pleasure working with you! Congratulations again on the beautiful wedding!
Matt
If your throwing a party and want to really wow your guest, definitely choose Potts and Pans. We had Matt steel drumming for us and he was the talk of the town and something most of our guest have never seen or done before.
Response from Potts & Pans Steelband:
Thanks Kevin! It was a joy to work with you. So happy to be have been a part of Stephanie's birthday! Once again, really great job putting it all together, I was really impressed with your decorating ideas!!
My experience with Potts & Pans is probably atypical in that we rented pans but not players, since I did the music and my best friends, all pan players, did the performance. Knowing that I wanted pan at the ceremony, I had been so stressed trying to find instruments...until I got in touch with Matt. He was so easy to work with and flexible, dropping off the pans before the ceremony so that we had enough time to rehearse and picking them up afterwards - the whole experience was so easy and seamless. In the midst of wedding craziness it was such a relief to know that Matt was so professional and reliable. I would absolutely work with Potts & Pans again the next time I need instruments.
We hired Potts & Pans to play our wedding after finding them online. We never had a chance to see them perform in person, but Matt Potts did an amazing job sharing different samples of what they could do with us ahead of time. They were extremely professional, flexible, and affordable. They worked directly with our venue on logistics of the day, provided all of their own equipment, and truly made the day ours. We hired them to play a combination of traditional steel pan music, covers of contemporary songs, and DJ the end of the night with pop music. I would highly recommend Potts and Pans for whatever event you are having.
I worked with Anthony Houston VP of Potts and Pans band to perform at our wedding. He was very accommodating to my requests on how I wanted the wedding venue to be arranged plus very quick to respond back either by email or phone in the early planning stages to the many questions that I had. Our wedding was held outdoors and the band set the atmosphere that I was going for at our wedding perfectly. I received many compliments on the music and told people to check out their website and was hoping the photos that Anthony asked me and my husband to take with himself and the band would have been posted on the Potts and Pans website under their August performances but I didn't see anything so was kind of disappointed about that :(
Response from Potts & Pans Steelband:
Thanks for the review Cindy! We had a great time at your wedding. Sorry for the delay in getting the pictures up - I was working on a post for all of last month - you can see it here: http://pottsandpans.com/pro/august-with-anthony/
Thanks again for including Potts & Pans in your ceremony, all the best!
--Anthony
I was looking to add something special during our ceremony I found the exact thing I was looking for! My fiancée and I were looking to add something to our wine ceremony (thing during our actual ceremony) and Anthony Houston, a member of Pot and Pans suggested he could arrange a unique piece for us and just wanted to get my opinion on a few piece of music. I met with him and listened to several pieces from various jazz musicians, gave him my opinion on them and stated clearly what “feeling” I was hoping for. I knew he played the vibes, wonderfully I might add, and knew the piece would be played on that. Day of the wedding and he has already spoken and conversed with the officiant about timing, speakers were tested and set up, microphones worked, and when the time for the wine came Anthony stepped over to his instrument and played a beautifully arranged piece that was exactly on mark to what we wanted. I was never once disappointed in the professionalism, expertise, or value of this group and would definitely seek them out again if I am looking for some good music to be played for a special occasion!
Potts and Pans performed for the child development center where I teach the school-age summer program. I was looking for a few different vendors to come in this summer as entertainment for all of the classes at our center. Potts and Pans did not disappoint!! They were fantastic and kept the kids attention (ages 6 wks - 13 years) for 45 min! They had they kids dancing and singing along to the music. I would definitely invite them to come back!! Thank you Potts and Pans for a wonderful experience!
Response from Potts & Pans Steelband:
Thanks Theresa, it was great working with you and the kids!
We had the pleasure of having the professional ensemble along with the community band out to perform for our Cub Scout Day Camp lunchtime entertainment. The audience consisted of 140 boys going into 5th grade along with teenage and adult volunteers and some younger siblings. The performance was educational as well as entertaining and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone! The boys loved that they even played 2 popular tunes that they could recognize from the radio and happily sang along. They also had 8 volunteers up for one song to play egg shakers (similar to maracas). The professionalism and attention to detail was outstanding. I really enjoyed working with Matt to make the arrangements and was treated with respect every step of the way by all of the performers. I highly recommend hiring Potts & Pans Steelband for your event!
We had Emily come out & play Jamaica music for our wedding reception and she was great. Everyone love the steel drum band. Thanks so much!!!
Matt Potts of Potts and Pans was kind, easy to work with, professional and above all made great music!
Potts and Pans was very easy to work with. They were flexible and extremely accommodating. We would definitely book again. Thanks!
The group lead an interactive assembly at my school. They presented an interesting history of the steel drums, that had students clapping, stomping, shaking, and a few going up front to join the group. The students' attention was captured. Within the history lesson, some well known tunes were incorporated into the show that invited even more involvement, including singing along. Overall, a very enjoyable performance that was very well suited for the school.
Highly recommend for your next assembly.
We recently had Potts & Pans play at a Grand Opening of our Luxury Apartment building. They did an absolutely amazing job! We wanted some nice steel band background music to go along with the party on the rooftop and they were exactly what we were looking for. The performance was perfect for the occasion and people were constantly commenting on how great the music sounded. The set list they choose was also a nice combination of some newer modern songs along with some traditional mixed in - it really was the best of both. I would Seriously recommend Potts & Pans if you are looking for a steel band and I will certainly be using them for other upcoming events at the building.
Wow! Potts & Pans have an incredible talent - their sound is so happy and compelling. They were wonderful to work with and even better performers. Highly recommend them!
Response from Potts & Pans Steelband:
Thanks Kristin!
It was a pleasure working with you and Macy's!!
From the moment I contacted Potts and Pans they were a delight to work with, professional, informative, and helpful sums it up. The musician (Anthony) showed up on time and played nonstop during the entire event. What was really impressive is not only how good he was but the diffferant types and styles of music he played on the steel drum. My guests were very pleased and enjoyed him very much.
Had a wonderful time with the band. They played just about every type of music you could think of, and did it well.
Great job. It made our night fun.
A wonderful experience , your skill and professionalism really enhanced the event , everyone love the music , it was festive and enjoyable .. We will definitely be using you again ..
Response from Potts & Pans Steelband:
Thank you David! We really enjoyed being part of such a wonderful event for HACIA!
This is the second event I booked and I can't tell you how fantastic they are...Highly recommend.. a unique and wonderful
5.0 /5.0
Corporate Event: 10/23/2014
Potts & Pans performed for an audience one evening at our public library, more of a program than a social event. The audience really enjoyed the unique musical sound of the steel pan drums and learning the amazing history and culture behind them. Great music with lots of energy!
I contacted Matt from Potts and Pans to inquire about having a steel band play for my sister who is dying of breast cancer. She loves listening to music and since she can't get out of the house and is in hospice, we thought we would bring the music to her. I found Potts and Pans through google and had no idea of the treat we were in for. Matt, Anthony and Kristina were able and willing to drive 55 miles to come to my sister's house with only 4 days notice. (We didn't have much time to wait since my sister's condition is beyond critical.) Besides being fabulous musicians, and sounding fantastic, they were all very warm and friendly and very respectful of the situation we were in. They shared information and history about their instruments, and answered our many questions. My sister was thrilled with the living room concert and loved every minute of it. I can't say enough about these three wonderful young musicians!
Response from Potts & Pans Steelband:
Thanks Mary!
It was an honor to do this performance for you, your sister, and your family. We are so happy that we were able to use our music to bring a little light to your lives!
Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to bring joy.
Matt Potts
We hired Potts and Pans to play at our Homecoming Dance, and they were AWESOME! They were incredibly professional, and the students loved the music. We had a three-piece band, and the music was both traditional and modern.
The students thoroughly enjoyed the music played during their lunch periods. We even celebrated by letting them dress up Jamaican style! The assembly was very good - it tied right in with our unit on sound and musical instruments through both information and demonstration. The student involvement was awesome - several students got the opportunity to come up and play. We would definitely do this again in a couple of years!
Response from Potts & Pans Steelband:
Thank you for having us come in to teach your students about the steelpan and the science of sound. We always enjoy being able to educate kids about the steelpan, and being able to incorporate science was even better!
The group sounded great, but next time we will have them bring more speakers to project more for an outdoor event. Everyone enjoyed the music and the different sound of the steel drum. We need to make sure it is main stage instead of backround dinning music. I wish they would add a singer to the group. I look forward to booking them again.
Thank you so much for making Berlyn's party so fantastic. Everyone was talking about how great you were... I would recommend to anyone wanting great entertainment for everyone!!!!!
Response from Potts & Pans Steelband:
Thanks Julie--we were thrilled to take part of such a fantastic event! Even all the lizards were jamming to the music :D
--Anthony Jay Houston
The Potts and Pans musicians were very professional, courteous, and talented. Set up and take down were seamless and they were very prepared for any weather occurrence. The historical information they provided about the music and instruments was very interesting and added a lot of value to the show. After the performance, many guests told me that this was the best band we had booked all summer. They begged me to bring them back again next year. I would definitely hire them again.
Response from Potts & Pans Steelband:
Thanks Rena, it was a pleasure performing for you and the patrons of the Waukegan Public Library!
This was the 2nd event that Potts and Pans played at for me. The performers understood what I needed and what the guests were looking for. The music was just at the right level quiet conversation and easy listening.
I will definitely work with them again and totally recommend them.
Potts & Pans was fantastic. Such a perfect fit for our Summer Luau to celebrate Father's Day at our Golf Club! The steel drum music was lively, on theme with our Luau and absolutely beautiful to listen to all evening. It definitely fit our needs and exceeded our expectations. A huge hit all around for all ages - totally made our event and contributed to the success of the evening.
Thank you Potts & Pans for providing awesome entertainment for Downtown Crystal Lake's 3rd Thursday event! Such a beautiful summer night and perfect for your sound! We loved it and are we are getting great feedback about how much folks enjoyed the evening!
I saw Potts and Pans two years ago and promised myself to have them at our families graduation party. Both of my daughters were graduating as was I from nursing school! It was worth the wait! He (Matt) played at our outdoor party during the dinner hours and the compliments never stopped coming. He was wonderful, professional, and kind to me and my guests. The day was perfect and so was the music. Thank you Potts & Pans for making our dream party come true!
We hired Matt to play the steel drums at our corporate event in January 2014. He was great to deal with throughout the planning process, showed up when he promised, was set up on time, and even wore a Hawaiian shirt to fit into our theme! He is a talented musician! The songs were great and the steel drums really added a much-needed fun element to our event! It truly wouldn't have been the same without Matt and his music! Highly recommended! We will hire you again if the opportunity comes up! Thank you so much!
Response from Potts & Pans Steelband:
Thank you so much for having me out Kelli, it was a blast working with you and your group. I'm glad I could help you guys win best booth!
Matt and the Potts & Pans Steelband met all our expectations. We asked them to play for about an hour during our store grand opening event. As part of the ribbon cutting ceremony, we asked Potts & Pans to play a patriotic song, which was just wonderful. They were on-time and very professional. I would recommend them to anyone looking to add an unique sound to their event.
I can't say enough about how much we enjoyed Matt and his steel band my daughter's wedding. They played at the ceremony and through the cocktail hour and our guests loved it. They also learned some news songs for us and we added some live vocals and together they sounded fabulous. I would highly recommend Potts and Pans.
Response from Potts & Pans Steelband:
Thank you Kim, we loved playing for you and your family/friends!
We really enjoyed Potts and Pans entertainment for our annual school field day. Matt was early to set up and was really great with the kids! Everyone was so excited to have him there. Thanks again!
Potts & Pans exceeded my expectations for our corporate group. They were very professional and very fun! The guests thoroughly enjoyed this group and would have them back in a heart beat!
Response from Potts & Pans Steelband:
Thank you Nicole, it was truly a pleasure working with you!!
As an event coordinator for a semi-professional hockey team, I reached out to Potts & Pans to enhance our "Beach Weekend" theme and I could not happier with this decision.
Very professional, easy to work with, adaptable, engaging, and above all -- talented! If you're looking for a great steel drum player then I would encourage you to strongly consider Potts & Pans. They took the time to learn the goals of our event and offered suggestions to help us not only achieve but maximize the atmosphere we were striving for. Our entire staff and the 4,000+ fans that attended our game that night were genuinely impressed with what Potts & Pans brought to the table.
I would gladly work with Potts & Pans at a future event!
Went to see the PPS on February 2 out in Lake Villa and was bummed their set had been cut short! I've seen members of the band play independently and was quite impressed -- both with the musicality and their willingness to talk shop after their set -- so I was psyched to hear about the PPS and their net clips had me hooked. Big disappointment in the shortened set but I'll make the trek again at next opportunity. 5 stars because I'm just so impressed with their sound and the guys I've met from the group were just plain cool. Looking forward to their next full show!
I've seen the Potts and Pans Steelband on multiple occasions and have always been impressed. I've heard them do everything from calypsos to classical pieces, all the way up to pop tunes - it's an amazing variety. I'd recommend them for any event if you're looking for the real thing...they are not just some guy playing Bob Marley Tunes with a backing track.
Price Range: $100 and up
Gig Length: 5 - 360 minutes

Along with being one of the only groups that can provide a real steelband, not just a single pan playing with guitars, we are also qualified educators. Whether you are looking for a straight concert filled with steelband music that ranges from classical to calypso and everything in between, or looking for an educational event, Potts & Pans is your best choice. The members of Potts & Pans have over 40 years of steelpan education under their collective belts. There may be other groups out there that have performers that are older, but you're going to have a tough time finding anybody more qualified or experienced with all aspects of the steelpan.
If you are looking for an educational event, please mention that in your quote request. We have special pricing for educational events in order to help more knowledge about this great instrument.
Potts & Pans Steelband is part of Potts & Pans, Inc. NFP, a not-for-profit organization that helps support the spread of the steelpan within the American culture. As well as performing, Potts & Pans also can provide clinics, masterclass, and workshops for your event. Why hire a group that just plays the clich music and does not really know what this instrument is about or its rich history? Potts & Pans values, and understands the importance of the heritage of this instrument and is willing to share that information with anybody that would like to listen.
If you are planning any cultural event and would like the caribbean to be represented, the only better choice than Potts & Pans is to fly a steelband out from Trinidad! There is no other group out there that can provide the same level of musicianship along side quality education as Potts & Pans.
Potts & Pans does not have to provide an educational element for your event though. If you are planning a party or wedding, Potts & Pans is also equipped to provide a great performance of just music to suit your event. Potts & Pans will cater to your needs. We view you as customers, not clients, and in our mind the golden rule holds true, "the customer is always right." We are capable of providing nearly any genre of music and can adapt our playing style and group size to fit your setting and budget.
There are getting to be more and more options when it comes to steelpan entertainers. Many of these entertainers are good entertainers, some of them are great. None of them, though, can touch Potts & Pans in terms of all around versatility. Potts & Pans is a top level performing group, coupled with an educational course, and tied together by extreme passion for the instrument. Don't sell yourself, and your guests short, get the best entertainment package available.
When hiring the Potts & Pans Steelband keep your setting in mind. We can provide anything from a solo panist through a full 10 piece steelband. The full steelband will require a relatively big area to set up in, while the smaller groups will not. The smaller groups are available as acoustic acts or with backing tracks. Backing tracks help provide a bigger sound and also allow the performers to have more fun with the performance and play more.
If performing outside, some type of shade must be provided. Direct sunlight is very bad for these instruments and will cause them to go out of tune!
