Are you ready to apparate into the magical world of Harry Potter and host a spellbinding party that even Professor Dumbledore would approve of? Well, grab your wands and prepare to conjure up an unforgettable Harry Potter-themed bash. From decorations to treats to activities, we have all the best Harry Potter party ideas you need for a fantastic celebration.
Start with an invitation
In recent years we’ve begun to rely on Facebook events and digital invites for spreading the word about our upcoming celebrations. But we recommend going back to the old days of physical invitations for your Harry Potter-themed party.
You’ve been accepted!
Make your guests’ dreams come true by sending a Hogwarts acceptance letter as your invitation. You can print them on parchment paper or stain regular paper to give them an aged and authentic look. Don’t forget a matching envelope and wax seal! You could also include a ticket to the Hogwarts Express with the party details.
Send your post by owl
Skip the mail and send by owl post instead to immediately get your guests in the Harry Potter mindset. Set aside a day a few weeks out from the event to hand-deliver your invitations. With some help from the owls, of course. Use plush owl toys, craft paper owls, or draw owls on balloons for a cute delivery surprise!

Transfigure your space
To kick off your magical soirΓ©e, you’ll want to transform your venue, house, or party space into a Hogwarts-worthy haven. There is no shortage of decorating ideas across the internet, but here are some of our favorites!
Get sorted
Start your Harry Potter party by sorting your guests into Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, or Ravenclaw. Have guests complete an online quiz, then create or buy a sorting hat to announce their house in an official sorting ceremony. Hang house banners in your “Great Hall” with matching themed party favors for guests to pick up once they know their Hogwarts house.
Enchant the room
Fishing line is your best friend for DIY Harry Potter party decorations. From floating candles and winged keys to letters flying out of a fireplace, there are so many ways to create a little magic with this Harry Potter birthday party idea.
π―οΈ Floating candles DIY: Buy some battery-powered candles and use fishing line and command strips to hang them around your ceiling for an enchanting effect.
ποΈ Flying keys DIY: Buy old-fashioned keys and hot glue paper wings to them, then hang them with fishing line around the ceiling at varying heights. Make one with bent wings for a Harry Potter Easter egg!
βοΈ Incoming Hogwarts letters DIY: You need a fireplace for this one! Tie a few fishing lines to your fire screen and connect them to the ceiling. Then, attach many Hogwarts acceptance letters to the lines.
Follow the wizarding signs
Designate areas throughout your party as famous Harry Potter locations and make a directional sign to send guests to the right places. They can arrive at Platform 9ΒΎ, visit Diagon Alley to grab party favors, and head to Hogsmeade to hit up The Three Broomsticks for a pint of butterbeer. Add Harry Potter-themed labels to your food, drinks, and activities for an extra touch.
