In this month’s talent spotlight, we caught up with Victoria Bayagich of Watercolor Connections. With a deep passion for art and a knack for capturing each person’s unique essence, she’s become a master at creating stunning, one-of-a-kind caricatures and portraits. We’re thrilled to share her insights and tips on developing a successful business and using GigSalad to do more of what you love.
Becoming a Caricaturist
Victoria’s love for art began in elementary school, where she eagerly checked out drawing books from the library to learn and practice. However, her passion was truly ignited when she experienced a street artist in action. “I encountered an elderly man with salt-and-pepper locs creating stunning charcoal portraits in downtown Detroit’s Greektown. His yearly dedication to his craft and the joy he brought to others sparked a fire in me…,” she recalls. Witnessing an artist transform a moment into a cherished keepsake inspired her to explore her own artistic journey — one that eventually led to the creation of Watercolor Connections.
The Art of Individuality
Victoria’s approach to caricature art stands out from the exaggerated portraits you might expect. Instead, she focuses on creating flattering, heartfelt portraits inspired by a “desire to celebrate individuality and make people feel special in their own skin.”
Zen Buddhist art and its emphasis on limited brushstrokes influence her artistic style. Expanding on this, Victoria says, “This philosophy encourages me to capture a person’s likeness swiftly and effectively. I believe that every brushstroke should be intentional, aiming to reflect the true essence of the person I’m painting.”
Capturing the unique likeness of individuals is what Victoria enjoys most about creating caricatures and portraits. She says it’s all in the details, from their jewelry to a small beauty mark or how someone styles their hair. “Seeing their faces light up as I incorporate these details keeps my passion for art alive, reminding me of the personal connections I create through my work,” she says.
A Picture of Tomorrow
Victoria has some exciting projects on the horizon. She’s gearing up to launch a YouTube series featuring live watercolor portrait sessions. Viewers can watch her creative process unfold and even ask questions in real time. Be sure to follow her journey on her YouTube channel and Instagram!
Victoria is also collaborating with the Motor City Street Dance Academy (MCSDA) to create a dedicated office space and lodging for visiting dancers leading workshops. She sees a unique connection between dance and her work as a portrait artist. “Both art forms are ephemeral, emphasizing the experience and motions captured in the moment,” she reflects.
Through this partnership, they aim to elevate both dance and visual art, highlighting the importance of community and artist support. Victoria passionately shares, “Our love for the arts is rooted in a shared appreciation for street performers, who often go unrecognized in the creative community. Together, we’re committed to ensuring that all performers and artists receive the recognition and compensation they truly deserve.”
