What do you do with a rubber chicken?
If you’re a comedian and a juggler, you use it in your variety show.
Greg Frisbee developed The Rubber Chicken Variety Show about three years ago because, well, why not?
“Everyone knows what a rubber chicken is, but no one knows what to do with them,” he said.
That is except one little boy Frisbee encountered at the Nebraska State Fair.
“He said he plays farmer with them at home,” Frisbee said. “That’s the first time I’ve ever come across a definitive answer.”
On Friday evening, Frisbee showed a crowd at the State Fair what he does with rubber chickens. He spun balls on two of them, made one dance and played a small one like a kazoo. His act also includes juggling and fire eating.
As people formed a half circle around Frisbee on Friday, he told jokes and started juggling a few balls. He worked his way up to juggling five balls while bouncing some of them off the pavement.
His next act involved spinning a large ball on his finger and then adding a second, smaller spinning ball to the top.
The ball spinning antics continued when Frisbee invited a 9-year-old boy named Logan to join him in front of the crowd.
“Let me ask you a question, how do you feel about rubber chickens?” Frisbee asked the boy, who smiled at him.
Frisbee quickly grabbed two rubber chickens from a nearby trunk and showed Logan how to hold them out at his sides with their beaks in the air. He then spun a ball on each beak before adding a hard hat with a point on top to Logan’s head and spinning a ball on the point. The crowd responded with loud cheering and Logan’s assistance was rewarded with a balloon dog created by Frisbee.
The act wrapped up with Frisbee eating fire from a hand-held torch. But before he started, he gave the audience a couple of tips.
“Don’t do this at home. I’m a professional,” he said. “It is recommended that I drink a water-based liquid before doing this. I prefer water.”
After taking a drink, Frisbee put on a hat.
“Secondly, I’ve got to protect my hair,” he said. “It’s all fun and games until the juggler catches fire.”
Frisbee has been a performer for 20 years. He started doing the act full time about 15 years ago and was a street performer in tourist areas around San Francisco, such as Pier 39. About 10 years ago he began touring fairs and festivals. The rubber chickens were an addition after he created a rubber chicken cannon for his act.
“People have an affinity for rubber chickens,” he said. “It taps into the American psyche and rubber chickens seemed like a good fit for fairs.”
For more than 20 years, Greg Frisbee has brought his show around the world and performed for countless audiences.
