{TILL THE DEATH OF ME RECORDS} My first breath of life started, June 8th 1983. Born in a small city; Charlottesville,VA. At the UVA hospital. I grew up in two even smaller towns, 15 years in Buckingham County VA, and 2 years in Appomattox, VA. My life was like the majority of most African American kids, poor. What I remember distinctly to this day, is living in a run down house, cold, rats in my under-ware drawer. My mother, father and sister sleeping in one bed to try and keep warm during the winter. Food wasn't much, oddles of noodles and red kool aid. During the summer I remember riding my bike listening to one of those old school boom boxes that kids used to have on their shoulders. Listening to LL Cool J, Rakim, and Big Daddy Kane, Micheal Jackson,Teddy Pendergrass , Marvin Gay, and the list goes on. I was five years old remembering lyrics to songs, word for word. I think that was my first sign of greatness. Then the ninety's came. Gangsta Rap which is more my era. 2 Pac was my inspiration. Seems like he was rapping about my life, every time he uttered a word. In a way I would say it molded my life. My father was there but he wasn’t at the same time, if you know what that means. Meaning he was there until him and my mom separated, but during our stay in the same house he was there in physical form, but vacant in everything else. I guess he didn’t know how to love. I ain't mad though. Its life, you move on. My mother did the best she could with what she had, which was very little but no matter what she made a way for my sister and I to get what we needed. 2 Pac made me want to rap. I just didn’t know where to start. I was in the eighth grade, my first free style was to that Busta Rymes beat, Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See. I crushed it. Every one was amped, shit even me, I didn’t know i had it in me. The crazy thing about all this, I knew I had something but I also knew I was lacking something. I didn’t know how to write rhymes. I asked my cousin Cecil how to write, but he wouldn’t tell me. He was really good but he made me learn on my own. Which didn’t pan out, I was still lacking the formula. So I just kept doing what I was doing free styling. I used to draw crowds. I felt like a super star with all the attention. My mother was still struggling. I got tired of rapping, well I wouldn’t say tired,it just wasn’t bringing in money, so I chose the street life. I had a few jobs too, they were fun but not good enough, so they didn’t last long, so I sold weed and a little crack, and took what I wanted to get what I needed. I wasn’t a major drug dealer by any means, but I loved the guns which was my downfall. I ran with a few dudes names are not necessary. I was a live wire. My loyalty took ten years of my life away at the age of nineteen. I did accomplish one thing I graduated high school. A month after I graduated, I was in jail facing double life and eight years for armed robbery. It didn’t faze me at the time My co-defendant turned state, well at least one of them did. It was his idea. Off to prison I go, that’s where the real journey begun. My first spot was South Hampton Receiving Unit located in VA. Well its closed now I think. With a situation like this you never know what to expect so expect the unexpected. You go in with the attitude you have a release date, but its a chance you wont make it out. I got put in a block, which is called a wing, every one is new so every one is feeling each other out. Nothing is being said to much. A month past and things are starting to look up a little, dudes singing, making beats and rapping at their doors, very talented guys are trapped behind those walls. If only people could hear them. I know they
could make it big, and make it happen really fast. I waited for my moment. I had my chance, first impressions are everything. So I had to come with it, of course I killed it. I started to see then,April of 2003 my talent was real. It was nothing to take lightly. Now I am part of the ciphers. As time went on my free styling skills was getting better and better. A lot of people thought it was written, that’s how polished it was. I couldn’t remember any of them. I tried to write again it still wasn’t working. I had too many words in a bar , like sentences from a book. It was tight reading it with no beat, but i couldn’t get it to fit a beat. So it definitely wasn’t the rite formula. Back to square one, (damn when am I going to figure this out?) That’s what I was asking myself. So June of that year 2003 they moved me to Augusta Correctional Center. The big leagues. GOD was always on my side even through my tough times. I must say I ran into family, guys i knew from the streets which is nothing to be proud of. We are all part of the statistics. Black males in prison before the age of twenty-five. The rap ciphers was big there I heard guys that would dominate the game if they had the chance. Their writing was ridiculous. I still couldn’t write. Four years went by, I’m still free-styling. 2007 of November I got transferred to Bland Correctional Center. I had a few homies there, a different environment I must say. The rap ciphers wasn’t big there, but they had some talent there. I met a guy that did beats for Lil Kim and Da Bart back in the day. He also did beats for Future, T.I., and Wale since he’d been home his name is DeCarlos Cunningham, Monster Producers. My homie bird was a NAS like rapper. He taught how to write my ryhmn's. He told me to write it like I'm freestyling' So I started freestyling and laying my verses and haven't turned back yet. WOW I must laugh now at how long it took me. GOD knew I wasn’t ready until I mastered the art of writing completely. Now on to the next stage. A month before I got out; which was May23, 2011, a good friend of mine Romero Dunn, he’s like a brother to me. At the time I didn’t know he made beats, and he didn’t know I was a rapper. We was listening to a band play one day, Romero Dunn said (I make beats for real). I said I rap for real. I gave him my number because I got out before him. Most of the time people exchange info and don’t act on the opportunity. I finally made it to my date. Hell gates were finally open, back to reality I go. Not knowing what to expect, I actually came home to a surprise. I had a ten year old daughter I didn’t even know existed. Got to know her. Fell into some unexpected trouble. I came out unscratched, six months home now I have full custody of my daughter that I knew nothing about. I had to be a full time instant father but GOD had his hands on me. His glory was around me. He definitely helped me with that one. I started recording at a friends house, his name was Jason. Recording in a closet. Then I received an unexpected phone call it,was Romero Dunn. We got together at Jason’s house started recording and never looked back. We started buying our own equipment, and started self teaching ourselves on how to use what we had. It was hard and frustrating but we were determined to learn. Now we are determined to make it in the music business. I always wanted my own record label. So I came up with the name Till The Death of Me Records LLC. I ran my idea past Romero Dunn. I knew at that moment I wanted him to be the co-owner of my company. I also started our own publishing company through B.M.I as well. Its called Till The Death Of Me Music Group. We worked hard as hell. Some people came into our lives, saying there ready to grind with us. In all actuality they was looking for that quick come up. They fell off quick. We got with Tate Music Group. We did all the work basically. We wrote all of our own lyrics, produced all of our music, mix and mastered, made the design for the cover, and inserts. Waiting to get a marketing and promotion push. We received nothing. I did receive one of my physical copies. Got a You-Tube trailer. We did a C.D. Called
Resurrected. It was an inspirational C.D. It was what they wanted. I was very disappointed in the outcome, but what can you do? Live learn and keep moving. We never slowed down not for a second. We knew our day was coming. Patience and persistence is key. I’m still grinding for my goals, it’s hard getting everything together, taking care of my family and bills, trying to make money to accomplish your goals is a test. In the end the hustle and struggle will be well worth the reward. Till The Death Of Me Records LLC will pump through my veins till the day I die, and even when I’m dead and gone the name will live forever. I know I can make it,if I am given the chance. Every day I wake up, I thank GOD for my opportunities. It gets harder and harder everyday to reach these opportunities. I try my best to keep focused, knowing my day is coming. I love music. I don’t like how music is turning out. Hot beats but the lyrics isn’t saying anything. I’m gonna change the game. I’m gonna put real life back in music. The whole world will witness this. People are starving for substance. Something with meaning. Anybody can put a nursery rhythm together. I do this for the love of my craft. I do this for my family but most importantly I do this for GOD. He gave me this talent for the whole world to see, and I’m ready to show it. No man in this world could stop his plan. My door is cracked open and I’m about to tear the house down when I step through it. When people hear my music they will realize it. I'm not about the bullshit. I write what I feel, and what I’ve seen and what I know. J Prophet
