As a band, we gathered as like minded individuals with a desire to perform the music of the Hard Bop and Post Bop eras primarily. This focus has expanded substantially as we continue to add repertoire from across the full range of improvised music. We perform in and around the G.T.A. area whenever possible. We look forward to the opportunity to perform for you; to establish the Ataraxia mindset, provide a clear pool in which to drop the improvisation “pebble” and see what unfolds before us!

ATARAXIA
[ at-uh-rak-see-uh ] noun
1. a state of freedom from emotional disturbance and anxiety
2. a state of serene calmness; tranquility; equanimity.
3. a G.T.A based jazz ensemble playing hard bop and beyond
We chose the name Ataraxia because it reflects the ideal state one should achieve in order to perform music of an improvised nature. To foster an equanimity open to all that may arise in any moment and respond in spontaneous accord with the unfolding events without any need for emotional control over the happening.
