I am a speaker with eleven years of policy and advocacy experience in the nonprofit sector. Upon my son’s Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis in 2011, I focused my advocacy experience and knowledge towards my son’s unique needs and quality of care. In December 2012, I created AUtonomous Solutions, whose movement is to inspire parents to embrace autonomy and empower themselves so they achieve the highest return in their advocacy efforts for their children. In addition to speaking I provide parent mentoring services to caregivers. I help parents work with providers to ensure that the care plans designed fully integrate the parents' expertise regarding their children.

My name is Yolanda Allwood and I reside in Shirley, NY. I am a parent mentor for families with children diagnosed on the autism spectrum or with other developmental differences. My main speaking topic is advocacy; however, I can expand my topic list to accommodate specific target audiences. My most popular talk is "Advocate...don't mitigate!". This presentation help parents and caregivers embrace the viewpoint that they are the experts on their children. Through discussion, I highlight the importance of parents and caregivers inviting guidance from providers and institutions while maintaining the conscious choice to make final decisions for their children’s care. Parents and caregivers of children diagnosed on the autism spectrum or with other developmental differences have the opportunity to be the megaphones for their children’s voices. Along with advocacy skills and knowledge of rights, parents and caregivers must also speak from a place of autonomy regarding their children's care. Additional topics include, "Successfully raising children with developmental differences...even when it sucks!" In this talk, I dissect and discuss the difficult moments in raising a child with developmental differences. I encourage caregivers to accept and realize that this is where the work begins. We don't get to pity, victimize, or emotionally check out. We must be present and courageous in these moments and allow our inner strength to guide and support us.
