Starting in fall of 2010, Back in the Day is the direct result of one common joy; great, classic music. By fusing the sincere vibes of the oldies with the bounce and flavor of hip-hop, adding a touch of jazz, then stirring it all up with a soulful, gospel foundation, Back in the Day brings a musical swagger like no other.
In January of 2010, bassist Jared Burkhalter and drummer Donald Braxton came together with saxophonist Khalil Stultz for the first time. Playing for University Christian Fellowship each week, an on-campus ministry at the University of Central Florida, Donald, Jared, and Khalil began to build chemistry. By summer's end, the trio began to be requested for their musical talents.
Teaming up with keyboardist Steve Johnson Jr., the group prepared for their first official showcase; the Lambda Mu chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho's 3rd annual 'Orhotorical Knights', a spoken word and talent show. Complimenting that September evening with lively on-the-spot grooves and popular gospel, neo-soul, hip-hop, and R & B tunes, the group not only turned heads but also re-kindled a desire for live entertainment in the UCF area.
From that one event in September of 2010 came a new professional demand for what the group supplies; great atmosphere. Now partnering with keyboard extraordinaire Darron Dunbar,vocalist/guitarist (now, Marketing Director) Raven Barnes, and trumpeter Brent Hall, Back in the Day is ready to set just the right tone for your evening. From elite corporate events and family get-togethers to laying down a studio track for your next single, Back in the Day will hold it down and liven it up with creativity, professionalism, quality, and swagger.

When it comes to music, Back in the Day believes in having a diverse ear. The sound of Back in the Day continues to be molded by "old-school" game-changers such as Earth, Wind, & Fire, Frankie Beverly & Maze, Stevie Wonder, and Anita Baker. Having a say in the group's hip-hop, neo-soul flow are The Roots, Erykah Badu, and Jill Scott, just to name a few.
As to properly deliver the engaging, familiar sounds of pop Back in the Day enjoys incorporating music from artists such as Michael Jackson and Jamie Cullum. On the Jazz bandwidth the group is tuned in to the works of pianist Herbie Hancock, saxophonists Grover Washington Jr. and Walter Beasley, bassists Marcus Miller and Jaco Pastorius, guitarists George Benson and Paul Jackson Jr., the Roy Hargrove Quintet and the Metropolitan Jazz Affair.
Helping to establish Back in the Day's gospel foundation are the works of vocalists and pioneers Israel Houghton, Z DeVaughn, Mali Music, Travis Greene, and J. Moss.
