Hi there! My name is Ben Fryxell, and I'm a professional cellist. I currently serve as Associate Principal Cello of the Jacksonville Symphony. But when I'm not onstage with the orchestra, I have done countless freelance engagements (and perhaps I'll do yours!). If you're looking for a solo cellist for your event, I just might be the right fit for you! I invite you to read more below, and ask any questions you may have.
Ben provided cello renditions of music by my late life-partner's favorite composers (Bach, Mozart & Stravinsky), the latter two of which required new adaptations for cello. Ben was superb, his playing was definitely top drawer. His 15-minute recital was the emotional heart of the memorial service. He was also an excellent communicator and introduced each piece with a few thoughtful comments. Everyone deeply appreciated Ben's outstanding performance.
Response from Benjamin Fryxell:
Thank you so much for your kind words and for having me, Michael. I was honored to participate. I wish you the very best.
We had a great experience with Ben's performance. He arrived early and well-prepared, and he gave a really exciting performance that was exactly what we wanted. I highly recommend him!
Response from Benjamin Fryxell:
Thank you, Katie...I'm so glad you had a great experience!
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with Benjamin. He was ahead of time and performed the music above my expectations. I would definitely work with him again. I was really pleased with him. He mastered the cello and it shows that he has perfected his craft.
Response from Benjamin Fryxell:
Thank you so much, Marc-Arthur! I really enjoyed making music with all of you!
Benjamin did an outstanding job at the memorial reception. He was meticulous about the selection of songs. He asked appropriate questions in preparation for the event and made sure everything was perfect during the reception. Truly beautiful music from a beautiful person. Thank you! Paula would have LOVED it!
Response from Benjamin Fryxell:
Hi Debby,
Thank you so much for the kind words, they mean a great deal to me! I am glad that I was able to help honor her memory, and I thank both of you for inviting me to participate.
My very best,
Ben
Working with Ben was a pleasure from the start. We had some difficulty selecting a processional piece, but Ben was right there to lend his professional insight and support. Polite, conscientious, and a talented musician, he is a rising star to be sure!
We booked Ben for my father's memorial service. He was quick to respond to my questions and very professional. We asked him to play 2 preludes from Bach cello suites. He arrived well in advance to trouble shoot any issues. His performance was beautiful. A fitting tribute to my father, who loved Bach. Thank you, Ben!
Response from Benjamin Fryxell:
Dear Sabina,
Thank you so much for your kind words. It was a privilege to work with you, and to help to honor his remarkable legacy.
All my best,
Ben
Ben performed beautifully at my father's memorial service. First and foremost his expression and technical skill at the cello was outstanding. With respect to his communication, Ben was prompt and considerate in all of his interactions. He sent a number of suggested recordings for his performance. He was flexible and helpful, suggesting specific compositions but also responding to my preferences. He arrived early, coordinated well with our organist and he solo performance left nothing to desire. We appreciated his consideration. His performance enhanced our memorial service immeasurably.
Response from Benjamin Fryxell:
Dear Peggy,
Thank you so much for your kind words! It was a beautiful service, and I am honored to have been a part of it.
All the best,
Ben
I hired Benjamin to play with my orchestra at the Carnegie Hall, he is very professional and easy to work with. I highly recommend him!

Cellist Ben Fryxell is a seasoned veteran of the concert stage, at home as a soloist, orchestral player, and chamber musician. Since 2022, he has served as Associate Principal Cello of the Jacksonville Symphony, where he was granted tenure less than a year after joining. Before that, he was a Fellow with the New World Symphony, where he played as a principal cellist under conductors such as Michael Tilson Thomas, HK Gruber, and Susanna Mälkki. He performed with New World and conductor Matthias Pintscher as a soloist in 2022, playing Bernd Alois Zimmermann's "Canto di Speranza".
Ben holds a special interest and strong skillset in contemporary music, and loves how many new sound worlds we can be exposed to by composers of our time. He was invited to be a New Fromm Player at the Tanglewood Music Center in 2022, where he was re-engaged the following summer. During his time in that role, he worked closely with composers such as Reena Esmail, George Lewis, Nico Muhly, Joan Tower, and many others.
Ben is also a passionate educator. In addition to teaching cello, he has also been sought out as a sectional coach, as well as a music theory pedagogue. He received his Bachelor of Music from the Juilliard School, where he studied with Natasha Brofsky, and worked for the Music Theory and Analysis Department as a Teaching Assistant and Tutor. He then studied at the New England Conservatory of Music for his Master of Music degree, where he was a pupil of Yeesun Kim. He held another teaching assistantship there, this time working as a keyboard harmony teacher.
In addition to being a cellist, Ben is a skilled pianist, conductor, composer, and arranger. He splits his time between Jacksonville, FL and the Chicago metropolitan area.
