To be sure, no one of just a few years' experience could play the instrument as I do. However, in the very beginning, as a high-school boy, I did take quite a number of music lessons from two tutors, one classical, the other jazz, but I ended up with a passion for jazz.

One of the wonders of jazz is that it gives the musician all the freedom he needs to interpret his favourite tunes. A good jazz guitarist is not restricted by the melody on the music sheet. Instead, he presents his own interpretation in a way that pleases your ear, most probably depending on his inspiration of the moment as well as the mood of the audience. As he extemporizes, you hear not only melodies, but also impromptu variations, which, replete with semitones and complicated scales, tend to demonstrate a sophistication foreign to other types of popular music.
