Specializing in '70s, '80s, '90s and early-to-mid 2000s music within genres of disco, funk, pop, rock, new-wave, house, & even some old-school hip hop.
In my life I’ve spent a scary amount of time assembling a massive classic music collection, and specialize in playing for environments where the importance is great classic party music, good times great sound quality over gimmicks and taking oneself too seriously. :)

Our company hired DJ FunkyBeak for 2 separate events, a Halloween party and a Saturday Night Fever and he absolutely smashed both. He had no trouble bringing people to the dance floor and was a huge part in making the events memorable for our members. Highly recommend booking him :)

Wow- what a great time we had! DJ Funky beat played no small part in making our daughters wedding such a fun and memorable event. The tunes he played were perfect throughout the whole evening, he listened to our needs, was extremely kind and helpful and his equipment was top notch! The sound was full but not too loud and not too quiet either- actually it was perfect and his music repertoire is vast! I highly recommend this DJ who will add so much fun to any event you host. Our annual fundraising event was held in Richmond, BC this year. I was looking for a DJ who specialized in disco music. I am so glad that Spencer/DJ Funky Beak. Spencer has a wide selection of disco music. He knows the music very well. People enjoyed dancing to the wide selection of music. In preparation for the event, Spencer showed me his disco outfit complete with aviator glasses. It was perfect. I loved the look. Spencer also worked with me in getting ready for the Name that Tune game. Since I had special guests attending the event, Spencer was helpful in determining how the sound/microphone system will work for the evening. Spencer is well organized. He arrived on time and had everything set up in time for the start of the event. Throughout the evening, Spencer was able to fit the scheduled prize draw events with the music. I wholeheartedly recommend Spencer for future events. Thank you , Spencer! We had fun dancing to the music. You were a gem to find.

We are forever grateful for DJ Funkybeak’s incredible ability to make everyone footloose at our events last summer! Strangers gathered to his sound and became one big family on the dance floor.
We were pleasantly surprised to see him spin vinyls the old school way, enhancing the whole experience and authenticity. Beak’s diverse and organized playlists of Disco, Funk, 70’s 80’s, SynthPop & New wave reached everybody’s eras and genre preference which made everyone kick off their shoes.
My favorite memory of the summer together was seeing all ages dancing the night away not knowing what they just stumbled upon and wishing the music will never stops.
Lastly, Spencer’s professionalism and reliability throughout the parties put us, organizers, at ease. Always on time and prepared to give his 100%. He was an excellent moral support to our parties, we couldn’t have done it without his positive energy. He is truly the reason to our event’s success and continuation!

What to Expect
In essence, you'll get a fun and friendly, yet professional open format DJ who probably has the largest and most diverse collection of retro dance music that you'll find in Vancouver. In my lifetime I have amassed a massive collection of '70s, '80s and '90s dance music ranging from disco, funk, synth pop, new wave, old school hip hop, and other sub-genres...all sourced from the highest resolution audio possible.
I have many years of beat mixing experience with all kinds of retro dance music, and I know how to properly work a dance floor for maximum enjoyment...including creating several of my own mixes and special edits on-the-fly to keep things flowing properly.
WHAT I PROVIDE:
✔ A great mix of old school music, mixed seamlessly;
✔ A massive retro music catalog (yes, I take requests!);
✔ A friendly, professional, yet fun & fancy free demeanour;
✔ Reliable, on-time performance;
✔ Professional, reliable equipment & setup;
✔ A memorable time for your guests.
WHAT I DON'T PROVIDE:
❌ A huge amount of newer top 40 music. Although I have a small selection of some more recent hits, I'm predominantly a retro music guy :). If you have a handful of newer tracks you'd like to hear though, I can ensure I have them for your event if I know in advance!
❌ Explicit lyrics. In order to keep my gigs open and welcoming to all, I play only clean edits of songs that require it. But feel free to sing along with whatever lyrics you like if that's your thing! :)
❌ Emcee services, other than general microphone announcements as needed. However, I can provide up to 2 microphones (corded or cordless) for your emcee(s) or host(s) to use as much as they like!

Hello! My name is Spencer, aka DJ FunkyBeak. I'm a late-40's music aficionado who's originally from Winnipeg, but have been in Vancouver for nearly 20 years. I started DJing with vinyl in 1993 as a 17 year old, did the nightclub DJ thing for about 14 years before semi-retiring, putting my focus on curating and collecting dance music from the '70s up to the early 2000's. Then finally in 2020 I started getting back into it, playing online via Facebook, Twitch and Mixcloud during the pandemic to rediscover my love for playing the kinds of music I've always loved best. Since the pandemic I have played several roller-disco type events both indoor and outdoor as well as some dance parties.

Compact but very powerful sound system which covers a wide area, indoors or outdoors.

Large Portable Battery Power Station (additional charge applies)
Self-contained battery power system which enables me to play without access to wall power outlets, for up to 4 hours. The units power all my equipment.

Setup Requirements
If your event or venue has an existing sound system, I will be able to easily patch in using a variety of cables and adaptors.
If possible, I'd appreciate access to wireless internet if available
(for outdoor gigs only), a 10 X 10 frame tent
2 AC power outlets (120V) preferred, however I can play using battery power for up to 4 hours for most gigs
