My wife and I recently renewed our vows back in April, as our financial situation plus tensions in my family prevented us from having a wedding. I remember we married in a courthouse on December 20, 1974 and we saw The Godfather 2 that same night on a preview at the local cinema. We held hands and I remember seeing how the projector lit up the ring on her hand that took a whole month salary to purchase. I felt both full of pride, but also tinged with guilt as I could not give my bride a proper ceremony. However, as I looked up expecting to see her eyes reflecting back the lights from the movie… I instead saw them gazing upon me. I was completely unaware that she was not watching the movie either, and had in fact trained her gaze on me, with so much love in her eyes that I would never forget how i felt that night. Every time in our marriage when any obstacle came our way, I remembered that night in Des Moines when I felt what it was like to truly be a man in love.
