Drezz Luvv was born Octavious “Dion” Brooks in Albemarle, NC. between 2 single parent homes by his mom and his stepped-up dad along with his brothers Trey & Tom. With a total of six to seven other siblings, that he would eventually come close to, Dion learned early on that co-parenting could be a norm even if the kids aren’t biologically yours.
Not much of an athlete; when told to go play Dion ran the streets of Kingville & the projects of Amhurst Gardens where he realized the advantages of being a street nerd. Dion was literally a lifelong student of math & science attending NC State, A&T University, UNC Charlotte, Baltimore City & Stanly community College studying Engineering.

Diamonds in the Rough (A Spoken Word Mixtape) is a collection of spoken word poetry spanning over 20 years. The project, ironically conceived during a flight to witness my daughter’s birth, captures reflections on life, growth, and the journey that transforms “Boyz to Men”—a nod to Michael Bivens.
The accompanying book, How to Grow Diamonds in a Garden, draws inspiration from Tupac Shakur’s The Rose That Grew From Concrete. Like Tupac’s metaphorical rose pushing through concrete, the book reflects the struggle and resilience required to “grow diamonds in a garden.”
Although I wasn’t a huge fan of Tupac musically—largely due to taking sides during the East Coast vs. West Coast hip-hop feud of the 90s—I deeply admired the structure of his poetry book. The way his raw journal scribbles were paired with polished, legible versions resonated with me. It reminded me of advice from Oprah Winfrey or Maya Angelou about writing everything down to preserve your voice and legacy.
The “garden” represents Amhurst Garden, the housing project where I grew up. It also symbolizes the mix of positive and negative environments, people, and experiences I had to navigate.
The “diamonds” are the hard-earned life lessons, the personal growth, and the person I’ve become—shining “bright like a diamond,” as my imaginary baby mama Rihanna would say. These diamonds also take form in the poems themselves, each one a product of that transformative journey.
