ARTIST HISTORY:
- Helene (Elenya) Hagenah began studying classical music when she was about 7 years old, taught by her mother, Classical Pianist Elizabeth Artman Hagenah. Some of the "musical" visitors to the Hagenah home included former Boston Symphony Orchestra Conductor Seiji Ozawa and other orchestra members or guest artists who stayed with the Hagenah's. Well known member of the Stockbridge, MA Police Department "Officer Obie" (of Arlo Guthrie's 'Alice's Restaurant' fame) was also a friend of her father's. Elenya's father, Henry Hagenah was a Pastor and Military Chaplain who also entertained as an Off-Broadway Actor and Producer and whose Mark Twain impressions were known worldwide. He and Elizabeth also entertained American Troops at USO shows in Europe.
- During her youth in Stockbridge, Massachusetts in the 1960's and 70's, Elenya (Helene) Hagenah had the opportunity to be a child model for Norman Rockwell, the noted American Illustrator who was also a Stockbridge resident. The Rockwell illustration featuring Elenya was for a Special Norman Rockwell Christmas Edition.
- Helene's (Elenya's) musical and entertaining career really began with sometimes impromptu musical, theatrical and traditional dance performances "produced" in her family's barn on Prospect Hill in Stockbridge, MA. (The same barn is now a formal performance space as it was relocated to The Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival located in Becket, MA.)
- Helene's more formal musical education continued at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA and at The Heidelberg Musik Schule in Germany.
- She has lived in Europe, Canada and the U.S.
- Her travels and experiencing of different cultures in those travels have contributed to her soulful contemporary songwriting and classically influenced orchestral compositions. The very personal and meaningful music and singing style in her story songs and have developed into what is offered here as some of her newest songwriting, composing, arranging and performing arrangements.
- Through intense and devoted time composing at her piano and recording and orchestrating tracks with her keyboard motif workstation; Elenya's newest songs have allowed her to truly "find her voice" and she sings quite beautifully on these songs. Elenya's heartfelt vocals and harmonies combined with her classically and jazz influenced piano work are considered "something of a find" by many listeners.
- The title cut "Where Are The Troubadours" was originally released in an earlier single version still available worldwide in online music stores and also in a new version often featured on this site and others.
- "I want to bring something very special and unique to those who listen to my music, whether through my recordings or in concerts," Elenya said.
- Elenya enjoys singing and performing her own songs and hopes that those who hear them will be touched by her stories and by the messages in her music.
- "It's exciting being able to get my music out to so many people after writing for such a long time now." she said, we're hoping to do some national level concert and promotional tours in the future."
- For now she hopes to be performing more intimate concerts, coffeehouses and regional festivals where she most especially wants to see how listeners respond to and hopefully enjoy her music. She is one of those 'prolific' songwriters who always has a new song in the works, and a new story and message to go with it.
- The pieces in Elenya's first CD, "White Wings" which were written while she lived in Canada, were recorded and produced as almost all instrumental, except for one song, "FOREVER" - featuring vocals by a contributing artist and friend, Bass Baritone Arthur Candia who passed away several years ago. This song will be re-released to honor the memory of Mr. Candia and because it was so well received by listeners when first released some 20 years ago. Mr. Candia loved singing the song "Forever" and said it is potentially an "evergreen" along with several other potential popular pieces Elenya has written. Those who want to take a "look back" will be given a "special retrospective" so that new listeners can see the real beginning of Elenya's composing and songwriting career.
- Elenya's musical history would not be complete without a "looking back" to the start where when she was just 12 years old she gave a Classical Piano music lesson to her parents, grand-parents and other friends and family members while visiting her Grandfather's farm. Her knowledge and performance ability on the piano with those early classical favorites at that tender age are quite evident and we hope to post this soon!
- Lastly, Elenya hopes that you will find something here for yourself, a friend or family member to enjoy because it has been her pleasure and honor to create this music for you.
