I am an opera singer and a cellist, and I have sung and played for a large variety of events - including dinner parties, weddings, business group receptions, and cocktail hours. I have a BM in both Vocal and Cello Performance from the University of Georgia and an MM in Vocal (operatic) performance at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. I would love to perform for your event!
Esther is a great Singer. Her performance at the funeral service was beyond expectations. She is very professional and caring. I was lucky to have her singing at my Dad’s celebration of life.

Gig Length: 30 - 90 minutes
Languages: English, French, German, Italian, Romanian
In addition to performances on the operatic stage, I have plentiful experience as a recitalist. Featured pieces have been selections from operas and old school musical theatre as well as songs from composers like Verdi, Brahms, and Strauss to Gershwin, Porter, and Kern. I have sung in English, Romanian, Italian, French, German, Latin, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian.
As a cellist, some of my favorite pieces to perform were the Bach Cello Suites, Haydn DM Concerto, and Martinu Sonata No. 2. Outside of my usual studies and performances, much of my experience playing cello comes from a variety of styles and ensembles in gigging. I have played and sung for many weddings, funerals, parties, and receptions.
Praised for her “dramatic excellence, flexibility, and beauty of her singing” by Classical Voice America, Romanian-American soprano Esther Tonea has appeared in concert and recital across the United States, Canada, and Europe.
As Diana in the world premiere of Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer’s If I Were You, Tonea stunned audiences and critics alike with “magnificent singing — an ardent, tonally plush performance” (San Francisco Chronicle). In this 2019 season with the Merola Opera Program, she “dazzled as Fiordiligi” (San Francisco Examiner) with her “gleaming tones and impeccable dynamic control” (San Francisco Chronicle). Tonea’s opera highlights also include the roles of Gilda in Rigoletto, Female Chorus in The Rape of Lucretia, and Suor Genovieffa in Suor Angelica.
No stranger to sacred music, Tonea has appeared as soprano soloist in Haydn’s Missa in Angustiis with the Athens Choral Society, Haydn’s The Creation with the University of Georgia, Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 in San Francisco, Mozart’s Exsultate, jubilate with Burbank Philharmonic, and twice in Mozart’s Requiem in D minor with California Symphony and Tennessee Wesleyan University.
In Milan, Tonea performed excerpts as Gilda from Rigoletto and Violetta from La Traviata for a Concerto Verdiano at Casa Verdi during her studies with Operavision Academy. With the American Institute of Musical Studies, she performed Norina’s aria “Quel guardo il cavaliere… So anch’io la virtuù magica” from Don Pasquale in the Eröffnungskonzert with the AIMS Festival Orchestra at the Stefaniensaal in Graz, Austria. In collaboration with the National Orchestral Institute + Festival and Wolf Trap Opera, Tonea performed “Glitter and Be Gay” from Candide among other Bernstein hits for their Bernstein at 100: Pops Extravaganza performance. She has also collaborated with the National Symphony Orchestra and Berkeley Symphony.
Tonea has participated in masterclasses and training programs with Richard Bonynge, Patricia Racette, Jane Eaglen, Aprile Millo, Martin Katz, Warren Jones, and Marco Gandini. Early in 2019 she performed alongside composer and pianist Jake Heggie at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco. Tonea has also collaborated with Maestros Richard Bonynge, John Morris Russell, George Manahan, Nicole Paiement, Grant Gershon, Donato Cabrera, and Cristian Reif in the US and Europe.
Tonea’s dramatic flair is best highlighted with her competitive pedigree: she is 2019 Semifinalist for the James Toland Vocal Arts Competition, 2018 finalist for the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center, and a first-place winner of the New York Lyric Opera National Vocal Competition, Hennings-Fischer Young Artist Competition, Dorothy Van Waynen Competition, and East Bay Opera League Competition. Additionally, Tonea is a two-time recipient of the Encouragement Award from the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, a two-time scholarship recipient of the Holt Memorial Competition, and a Presser Scholar. She is a winner of the Concerto Competitions at the University of Georgia and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Tonea holds a Master of Music in Voice from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees in Vocal Performance and Cello Performance from the University of Georgia. She is slated to appear at Tennessee Wesleyan University to give a masterclass and perform as a featured recitalist in October and as soloist in the Saint-Saëns Christmas Oratorio in December. As a cellist, Ms. Tonea holds her Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance from the University of Georgia, where she studied with J.S. Bach scholar Dr. David Starkweather. During her time at the University of Georgia, she performed in the UGA Symphony Orchestra, UGA Opera Orchestra, and as continuo for the early music choral group Collegium. She spent many of her weekends performing for weddings, receptions, etc. as a soloist as well as part of string duets, trios, and quartets. She has performed as a cellist across the southeast and west coast of the United States and Canada from venues as small as coffee shops to large churches and auditoriums.
From the event planning point of view, I do not usually travel with amplification equipment, as it is in almost all cases not needed, regardless of whether the venue is indoor or outdoor. This information holds true as a cellist and a singer. If the venue is noisy, amplification might be required.
As a singer, I collaborate with at least one other musician. In most cases, the accompanying instrument is a piano. I have also performed with various combinations of strings (quartet, trio, orchestra, etc.), and in some cases I have even performed alone but with soundtracks. In this case, of course, a speaker will be required.
As a cellist, performances can easily be done alone/unaccompanied. Depending on the requested arrangement, some time might be required to acquire an accompanying musician(s).
Please do not hesitate to ask any questions if you may have them!
October 26, 2019 • 10:00am - 11:30am | Funeral/Memorial Service |
This depends on the type of gig, as I tailor my performances to suit preferences and requests. For example, for a vocal recital at a retirement home I might offer selections by Brahms, Verdi, Mozart, and Heggie. For a cello performance at a coffee shop or a reception I might offer selections from the Bach suites, arrangements of popular pieces for cello solo, and hymns. The hirer (you) may be as involved as he or she may like to be in this selection process.
