Music has always been the dominating force in my life. I have been a semi professional drummer for decades. I also sing backup and lead vocals. I have been told by the wide variety of musicians I have worked with that I am a solid, grooving drummer that plays for the band and the music. I am looking for opportunities to play here or elsewhere. I am a fast learner and pride myself on providing what the bandleader needs.

"Sam, it was an absolute pleasure to have you on the gig! You are so professional and a great collaborator. I may have mentioned that my Dad is a pro drummer down in Orlando, so my ears are always sensitive to the drummer sound. Not only do you have a great sound, but your rhythm is super steady and your fills are just right for amping up to the different levels of a song. Thank you for being so on top of your game!
Yesterday was an amazing, positive experience and we do hope that you will join us again to play someday! I'll keep you in the loop if we get any dance gig requests."

Influences/ Drumming: Buddy Rich, Steve Gadd, Clyde Stubblefield, Levon Helm, John Bonham, Don Brewer, Kenny Aronoff, Billy Ward among many others. Perhaps my biggest contemporary drumming influence is Billy Ward, whose creative, melodic, and most importantly, MUSICAL approach to drums has been a huge influence!
Influences /Music: The Beatles, The Byrds, The Who, Miles Davis , Weather Report, The Allman Brothers, The Band, and so many others from Aerosmith to Frank Zappa.
Recent work : Trisha Mason Band (Original Folk/Rock/Traditional music) Tomorrow Morning (Original / Reggae influenced acoustic Pop) Eastbound ( Traditional Country and Rock) Lost Boys (Hard Rock, Blues) Jam Company (Grateful Dead Blues Traveller, jam influenced Rock And Pop) Sam has played venues from Virgina Beach, Virginia to the Canadian border with talentedlocal acts.
Since moving to the state of Maine, Sam has been building his skills on drum kit consistently. The talent pool is immense, and he has evolved into being an on call drummer for anything from weddings, to gigs with local acts like Trisha Mason Band, Eastbound, Tomorrow Morning, and Lost Boys. He also keeps his chops well oiled by supporting musicians at Open Mics, and Sam believes that there is no better music school than diving in and playing with a wide variety of musicians and musical genres. Sam has had the privilege of drumming with literally hundreds musicians from California, to Kansas City to Washington D.C.
"I got to jam out with Sam Lacey last night in Greenville. Always love playing with new people, especially talented drummers who know how to groove!" Gaylen Smith/ Bassist/ Penobscot Theater Company and Tomorrow Morning
Sam was bitten by the music bug particularly hard while attending James Madison University. There were many talented student musicians and roommates that he would frequently jam with at private parties. The amazing music scene that was happening in and around Charlottesville , Harrisonburg and Washington D.C., featuring enduring legendary regional bands like Skip Castro Band, The Nighthawks, NRBQ, and Johnny Sportcoat And The Casuals, changed his view of music completely.
Sam's first serious foray into drumming was in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he attended Frank W. Cox High School, and was invited by his friend, bassist Chris Parsons, to join an all instrumental Rock band "Mantra" as conga, cowbell and percussionist. At that time, Sam felt more adept at hand percussion than drums, and to this day he stays active playing Conga, Bongos and Dejembe. Mantra had some success opening for local acts such as Bill Deal And The Rhondels, (a bit of a mismatch of genres, but that's another story) at The Virginia Beach Civic center , a stage graced by major acts Like Frank Zappa and Jimi Hendrix.
