I am a classically trained flutist having studied at the Juilliard School in New York City and at Rice University in Houston. I have performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Louisiana Philharmonic, well as the Houston Symphony, Grand Opera, and Ballet Orchestras. As a captivating performer and passionate music educator, flutist Douglas DeVries has built a dynamic and multi-faceted career across the United States.
From his home base in Houston, TX, he is the Solo Flutist of the contemporary music collective Loop38, and is a frequent guest performer with the Houston Symphony, the San Antonio Symphony, the Louisiana Philharmonic, Musiqa Houston, and the Texas New Music Ensemble. He is an Adjunct Flute Professor at Houston Community College, and as a Young Artist for DaCamera of Houston, has both taught and performed at the Menil Collection, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and in public schools throughout the city.
Having grown up as a Seattle transplant originally from Los Angeles, Mr. DeVries maintains an active performing schedule in both cities. He is a regular guest collaborator having performed numerous world premieres with the Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra in Los Angeles. In Seattle, his trio The Living Music Project with soprano Shelly Traverse and pianist Yvonne Chen, commissions new works and performs annually each summer in venues throughout the Pacific Northwest.
As an orchestral musician, Mr. DeVries has worked with many of the world’s leading conductors including John Adams, Alan Gilbert, Nicholas McGegan, Carlos Miguel Prieto, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Leonard Slatkin, Robert Spano, and Michael Tilson-Thomas. Highlights from previous seasons include a tour to Royal Albert Hall for the BBC Proms, performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic during their summer season at the Hollywood Bowl, and orchestral residencies at Carnegie Hall, as well as multiple guest performances including the New World Symphony, the Florida Grand Opera, and the Chattanooga Symphony.
Mr. DeVries was an early winner of From The Top’s Jack Kent Cooke $10,000 Young Artist Award, and was a prize winner of the Houston Flute Club’s Byron Hester Competition and the Seattle Flute Club’s Young Artist Competition. He has appeared as guest soloist in performances of Bach’s complete Brandenburg Concerti, Mozart’s D Major Flute Concerto, and the Ibert Flute Concerto, and as an artist faculty member of the Fine Arts Summer Academy in Nashville, TN, he has appeared in performances at the historic Grand Ole Opry. Additionally, he has been featured on NPR, BBC’s Radio3, Southern California’s KUSC, and KJAX in Aspen, CO, and can be heard on world premiere recordings of Bela Fleck’s “Louisiana” Concerto as well as on composer Daniel Knagg’s album, “Two Columns at Sea”.
Mr. DeVries received his Bachelor of Music degree from The Juilliard School in New York City as a student of Jeffrey Khaner, and his Master of Music degree from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music having studied with Leone Buyse. Douglas fell in love with CrossFit in the spring of 2018, and in his free time he can be found working out at CrossFit Central Houston.
