Phillip “Freret” Perkins (born June 27, 1988), has always had a passion for music. Raised in the Uptown area of New Orleans, Freret began to develop a sense of work ethic to chase his dreams following a series of events that would change his life forever. Forced into a struggle he couldn’t fathom, his mother was a single woman, and worked tirelessly to provide for him and his older brother. In the year of 1995, Freret was introduced to his first hip-hop record entitled “Killing Me Softly” by the Fugees. Immediately, he became inspired by Lauryn Hill’s truth.
Later, he began to be highly influenced by Tupac, Master P., Biggie, and the 90’s wave of hip-hop. This created what people consider today an extreme lyricist, perfectionist, and student of this particular art form. Growing up very underprivileged, Freret was unable to purchase music in an era in which albums and cassettes were only available through store purchase. He and his childhood friends would constantly get in trouble for reciting lyrics in class. However, by him not being able to afford the music, he would sometimes stumble over the lyrics with his own lyrics.
Highly interested in school throughout his early childhood, Freret would attend summer programs as early as 6 years old, amongst 8-9 year old. He recollects around this same time, he frequently enjoyed “Hooked on Phonics.” With music obviously being a fine print on his brown paper bag list, the youngest son of two emerged to use extensive vocabulary in his music. This same music that has embodied Freret all would soon become a blur. With his father being absent in his immediate life, stress began to build on his heart at a time where his peers looked up to their fathers. Therefore, his music thoughts would become as dark as the rooms he would recite in. “I was just getting pain out, they say love is pain. So I figure, why not share my love through my pain? Music was the only way I had ever known.” Problems began to hinder his thinking, as any other impoverished kid. These same problems would began to flourish throughout his everyday life – but for this youngster, having seen horrible situations occur so much, it became second nature to express himself & elaborate in unique depth of them.
