Gary Reed
Performer/ Guitarist/Song Writer
Gary Reed’s music is an intriguing mix of fingerpicking guitar, heartfelt lyrics that tell tales of love, loss and longing in the best tradition of JJ Cale, Mark Knophler and Neil Young. Little wonder Reed was a regular player at New York’s Bitter End, Folk City, Kenny’s Castaway and Max’s Kansas City during the ‘60s and ‘70s. Moving to San Francisco in the 70’s he become heavily influenced by and part of the San Francisco acoustic-fingerstyle music scene, ala Hot Tuna and the Dave Girsman Quintet. He has opened for some great players such as: Jerry Jeff Walker, Billy Joel, Randy Newman, and Joe Walsh.
Now based in New Jersey, Reed’s songs and ardent presentation of intricate musical arrangements underscore his musical passion that has evolved over the years. Influenced by great guitar players from the early blues artist to next generation players as Meryl Travis, Chet Atkins, and Doc Watson to current players Leo Kottke, Tommy Emmanuel, Michael Hedges and many others. Reed has incorporated these styles into unique original songs and interesting arrangements of cover tunes.
Currently, Gary is active again performing over 150 gigs a year at clubs and festivals in the New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania area. His repertoire includes great guitar arrangements, progressive song arrangements and original music. He was honored to be a featured/main stage performer at the 2001 Chet Atkins Society in Nashville. Also he was a guest performer at the New Jersey Guitar Show in Great Gorge playing alongside of Les Paul, George Benson and other premier NJ guitarists.
Gary continues to write and arranging new music and has completed two recording projects. He is in the process of recording new roots based material that features vocal harmonies and hot instrumental arrangements.
