As you sip a cup of tea, whether Assam, Darjeeling, or Oolong have you ever wondered about the far off land where it's grown. Sit back and take a journey filled with the sights, sounds, and daily pace of a tea plantation. Lisa will delight the audience with her description of the experiences of the country, her interaction with local people and knowledge of the tea plant and leaf processing.
Beginning in 2008, Lisa took her first tea trip, “7 Cities to Teas” thorough Den’s Tea Torrance, CA. This opened the road to a global tea exploration. The goal: to learn about tea, its processing methods, and what makes each tea unique whether hand processing or machine, but all the elements that build each tea’s unique qualities including the cultural nuances of the people and the regions.
While in China, Lisa experienced teas where hand processing was more prevalent than machine. China is known for its Silver Needle tea. Hand plucking is a must in order to produce this particular tea. Culturally, Lisa experienced a first-hand understanding of the kindness and generosity of the people. “Tea is everywhere; tea is their way of life”
In Japan, Lisa experienced their distinct Tea Ceremony with Matcha green tea. She learned Matcha comes from the new shoots of the tea plant. Before it becomes Matcha it is Tencha these are the first leaves from the tea plant carefully grown under the shade in order to produce deep green first leaves. This produces tea that is sweet tasting without bitterness. The manufactured leaves are ground like flour to produce a fine green powder. Matcha has a wonderful aroma, with a rich mellow taste. A sweet is always served with tea. All things display a specific balance and manner.
In Taiwan, Lisa observes their exquisite tea ware. Again the enjoyment of tea is a part of their daily life. In 2014, a trip to Ali Shan, Taiwan, introduces Lisa to the distinct mountain culture of that region along with a growing knowledge of tea harvesting and processing while working alongside with their tea master.
Darjeeling known as “the champagne of teas” in the spring this tea is delicate, sweet, aromatic as after the monsoon season the taste of the tea transforms to a rich muscatel taste when processed. Where the Darjeeling grows, you know you are next to heaven as hints of the scent of tea permeate the crisp clean air while your eyes take in the surrounding beauty.
Assam teas, with their rich bold delicious tastes reflect the wonderful chaos of India. The Assam blended with spices reflect the beauty and culture of the country and its people.
Shri lanka is where Lisa took an adventure in Black tea. Culturally, Tea is used as part of their greeting. Imagine; where ever you go you are served a cup of tea. This tradition establishes a positive start to any sort of meeting or relationship. Shri Lanka boast hill sides full of tea plants where waterfalls are and rubber plants grow as a regular part of the landscape creating a misty air climate.
Take a journey with Lisa…she will give a presentation on one country, or can talk about various vignettes of each experience where adventures and tea blend brilliantly.
