Greg Lamboy

Whether singing one of his own award winning songs or putting his personal spin on a familiar favorite, Greg Lamboy’s talent is hard to miss. An accomplished guitarist and talented vocalist, the San Francisco singer songwriter has released 4 CDs under his Mercy Street Entertainment label and performs frequently in the Northern California area, both as a soloist and with his band Pacific Standard. Greg’s performances are intimate and inspiring; he possesses that rare ability to put into words our most heartfelt emotions delivering them in a strong clear voice and commanding guitar style.

Greg Lamboy has been singing since he could speak. Starting at age 3 he would sing himself to sleep with the songs he heard on the radio. The music continued through grade school where he got his first taste of indie stardom. “My 1st grade choir teacher found out I ‘played’ guitar and asked me to bring it to class. I stood up in front of a bunch of 6 year olds with my Sears plastic guitar, strummed one open chord and the crowd went nuts. I thought ‘Hey, I could get used to this.’” he says with a laugh.

He started writing songs in high school after purchasing his first real electric guitar (a Fender Strat he still owns), and began playing with local bands near his New Jersey home. From there he attended NYU where he studied Music Technology, showing an aptitude for production and arrangement. After a few years performing on the East Coast circuit, Lamboy moved to West Coast and settled in the San Francisco Bay Area. He quickly became a fixture in the local music scene, through his involvement with the West Coast Songwriters organization and in founding the New Acoustic Movement, a series of singer/songwriter showcases around the Bay Area.

Lamboy was fortunate enough to study vocals under the renowned Judy Davis, whose former students read like a who’s who of the music world: From Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, and Tony Bennett, to 60’s icons like Janis Joplin and Grace Slick to later hit makers like Eddie Money, Journey, and En Vogue. “She was truly a musical mentor.” Lamboy says. “The lessons went so far beyond simple vocal exercises, going into presentation, repertoire, and music business savvy. It was the best graduate school any singer could hope for.”

2002 saw the release of his first full length album, “Every Drop of the Good”, an 11 track fully produced effort about which Music Connection said “Acoustic-pop troubadour Lamboy offers consistently melodic songs that are heartfelt observations on everyday life” followed by “Lift” in 2007, of which Evolution of Media affirmed “Lamboy, with vocals to knock you off your feet and break down hearts of stone, has the ability to reach out to the audience, connecting him to the listener, and make them think that he's talking only to them.”

Always looking to stretch his boundaries, Greg formed the Greg Lamboy Band with some top Bay Area musicians and produced his 2009 follow up EP, "Where You Are". "It was more about getting a group togther and emphasizing performance over production", Lamboy says. The American Songwriter Show opined “A night of Greg's songs is like opening up a window in a tiny room and seeing out to the big beautiful world beyond" after the band's performance on the program.

2012 saw the release of "Quiet Now", his most intimate and subdued offering, more closely related to the solo acoustic performances that he routinely performs around the Bay Area. The album saw him back in the studio with longtime collaborator and producer Ben Leinbach. "Ben is a very intuitive producer as well as a fantastic drummer and percussionist. It's always very easy to create great music when he's involved." His version of Paul Simon's "Late in the Evening" garnered repeated airplay on KFOG radio's “Acoustic Sunrise" program.

Shortly thereafter, Greg decided to switch directions once again and endeavor to put another group together. "I love performing solo. There's nothing like being one on one with an audience. But there's a different feeling altogether when you collaborate with great players. It feeds a different part of the Muse." Lamboy began frequenting the "Los Trainwreck Jam", an ongoing jam session in San Francisco's Mission district where he met noted Pedal Steel guitarist David Phillips and keyboard player Ian Ratzer. "I heard them playing just about every song you can imagine and they were absolutely stellar. I had to play with them", says Lamboy. He reconnected with Chris Akin, a Bay Area blues veteran with whom he had previously worked in an acoustic trio, and after enlisting Ben Leinbach to play drums, they began performing around the San Francisco Bay Area as "Pacific Standard". "I picked the name as an homage; in part due to our West Coast origins as well as to the high level of skill of the performers display, i.e. setting a high standard or benchmark. Also, it's similar to the name American Standard which is a very popular brand of toilet. I liked the dichotomy of saying at any given time this group could make superlative music or sound very close to a bucket of crap. Always good to leave some wiggle room.", Lamboy states with his characteristic good natured snark. 2018 will see the release of Pacific Standard's debut album entitled "The Honeyed and the Bittersweet".
