HeartStrings is an acoustic duo with Jennifer Ayers-Barnard and Jackie Massey Hall. They perform a mixture of rock, folk, country, and pop; adding their own harmonic style and textures. The duo provides a unique blend of vocal harmony, as well as accompaniments using acoustic guitars, mandolin, keyboard, recorder flutes, and percussion.
Jenny and Jackie grew up singing and harmonizing together, beginning in their grade school years in rural Virginia. They continued to sing together in schools, churches, weddings, and other community events while adding guitars to their duo in high school.
Jennifer went on to major in music in college and received a Bachelor of Music Education from The University of Texas at Austin, followed by a Masters and later a PhD in Music Education from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She has taught music for over 25 years at every grade level and today is a Professor of Music at Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke. She has performed in numerous churches across the country, musical theater, opera, choral groups, and various rock bands throughout her life; singing and playing piano, keyboards, guitars, mandolin, and many other instruments. She lives in Ferrum, Virginia with her husband Mark and son, Gareth.
Jackie has been a Registered Nurse for over 20 years with Carillion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and is currently a Plan of Care Coordinator. She lives in Patrick County, Virginia with her husband, Ronnie and enjoys their shared love of horses and Labrador Retrievers. She has sung and played guitar for numerous church performances, weddings, and community events. Jackie has been a longtime member of Hillcrest Baptist Church’s praise team and choir and is a frequent soloist. She previously was a member of the community’s popular gospel group, His Own and also performed with the bands, Fatz and McGuffin during the 1980’s.
We grew up in the 70's and 80's so, our biggest musical influences come from those eras. Some of our favorite groups from then are Heart, Eagles, Dan Fogelberg, Journey, and Fleetwood Mac. Later artists that we like to borrow music from include Sheryl Crow, Wailin' Jenny's, Nickle Creek, Little Big Town, Lady Antebellum, and many more!
