Summary
My name is Humberto Eduardo Upierre Casellas. I was born on July 17, 1960, in the city of Havana, Cuba.
I began my music studies at the age of ten with Maestro Héctor Terrero. I took private lessons with him, who lived next door to my house. With him, I learned to play the guitar and master the different Cuban musical rhythms, such as son, guaracha, bolero, conga, habanera, danzón, etc.
At 16, I entered the “Gerardo Guanche” music school, where I continued in the specialty of bass guitar, with Maestro Rafael Almazán and other music teachers from different specialties such as solfeggio and theory, music history, and musical appreciation. Several years passed until I entered the professional development school “Ignacio Cervantes.” There, I continued my studies in bass guitar and acoustic bass with teachers Carlos del Puerto and Silvio Vergara, members of the Cuban groups Irakere and Rumbahavana.
At “Cervantes,” I continued my studies and completed contemporary harmony with Maestro Mario Romeu.
In 1980, I began my career as a professional musician, joining different groups in the city of Havana, standing out as a bassist, composer, and arranger.
In 1989, I founded my own orchestra “Costa Caliente,” performing various activities throughout the island. In 1992, I traveled with the Chekere Group, a Cuban music trio, to the Dominican Republic, where I sought asylum and then, after four months, traveled to the United States through the Cuban American Foundation founded by the late Jorge Mascanosa.
Thus, all these years passed in Miami, working as a musician in different parts of the state of Florida and developing my skills autodidactically. Currently, I am a producer, arranger, composer, and band director. I work as a guitarist, bassist, and singer. I master and know some instruments such as guitar, bass guitar, baby bass, double bass, tres, piano, trumpet, and minor percussion (güiro, maracas, claves, bongo, bells, etc.). I have recorded albums with renowned groups such as “Son by Four,” “Compay Son,” and “Trio Sabor.”
Now I am working in different places in the city such as “Mojitos Restaurant” in Dolphin Mall, “Cigar Cuban Crafter” in Miami, Cuba Ocho, and I Love Cuba Ocho. I participate in events such as the Hispanic Festivals in Coral Gables, concerts by Annia Linares, and other recognized artists from the area. I have compositions of my authorship with different artists in the country, such as the group “Tiempo Libre” directed by Jorge Gómez with the song “Ahora te quieres ir,” with Milles Peña with the song “Torbellino de Amor,” and with Annia Linares in the song “Yo no voy a quedarme así,” a song included in her latest album, for which I worked on the arrangement of all the tracks.
