Overview
As a professional piper of over 20 years, I bring a unique dedication to the instrument, and am committed to producing a beautiful tone and sophisticated repertoire to any event that I play. I play everything from traditional Scottish and Irish favorites to high level tunes and ceol mor. Over the years I have performed at all kinds of events including: weddings, parties, retirements, comedy sketches, prime time TV appearances, surprise engagements, pub crawls, school fairs, St. Patrick's Day parties and parades, and more somber events such as funerals and memorial services.
I split my time between my listed location in CT and my place in White Plains, NY.

Ian's amazing talents were shared with us on Earth Day when our family & friends celebrated the lives of my parents who had recently passed away. I'm played outside the church as the guests were streaming in which was a welcoming and powerful tone to set for the celebration of life. After the mass Ian played outside as we were on the greeting line and as people were leaving the church.
Rather than a sad event, Ian worked perfectly with our desire to have beautiful Scottish melodies that created a feeling of love and gratitude.
Iam was the absolute perfect addition to our day of celebration for the parents that we love. I am so grateful to have found him on Gig Salad. It made the job of organizing a family event so much easier and the result was wonderful. Cheers!

Ian was willing to work with us and provided exactly what we needed for our church service. He accompanied the choir, played with the organ, and added a few of his own solo pieces. Easy to work with and excellent player. I would recommend him without reservations.

Ian did an amazing job! He showed up early, performed beautifully and made the process so easy!! He performed at my dad’s celebration of life, and in a time when a lot is going on and felt overwhelming to plan things, Ian made everything so easy and seamless when it came to his part that day. I so appreciated that he arrived earlier and everyone absolutely LOVED the special touch of having him there. He played while people arrived and then we opened up with a song and so many people who were there had wonderful things to say and even teared up during it. If you are looking for someone to play the bagpipes for an event, look no further! You found your guy!

Ian was an absolutely amazing addition to our wedding. He was easy to work with, reliable, on time, and professional. The process of booking was seamless from start to finish. Ian played outside the church before our guests arrived and again as everyone left. So many guests commented on how talented Ian was and how incredible he sounded. We hired Ian for our wedding and would recommend him over and over again. My dad is a piper from Scotland and had difficult requests, all of which Ian fulfilled wonderfully! He made our day so special. All of the guests, about 50% of which were from Scotland and Ireland, were extremely impressed with Ian’s talent. In addition to his talent, Ian is very prompt with responding and very accommodating. If you’re considering booking Ian, do it! You will not regret it!
Ian was wonderful even though event was uncovered, rain fell steady and he was standing on a hill.
His music was ideal finishing touch to my dad’s graveside service. Thank you so very much Ian.

Needed a piper for a famjly funeral and, despite short notice, Ian took the job, exceeding every expectation. He looked immaculate, and his piping was extraordinary. The renditions he performed of Highland Cathedral, Amazing Grace, and Flowers of the Forest were breathtaking. His rates were more than fair and reasonable, particularly given the professionalism of his communication, comportment, and musicianship. Can't recommend him highly enough!

We were finally able to have a celebration of life for my mom who passed during the pandemic. It was held in a public garden where a pergola was named in my mom’s honor. Ian came at the exact right moment to pipe our group to the estate house where a special dinner was held to remember my mom. Ian communicated with me as I was planning the event and was happy to travel quite a distance because he just loves playing the bagpipes. The song he played was perfect too. I would definitely use him again.
My father would have been very happy with the music.

Ian agreed to play for my brother's 40th birthday -- a very casual afternoon party with family and a few close friends. Everyone came spilling out of the house when he began to play, and we all enjoyed our private concert immensely. He even ended with "Happy Birthday!" It was also a lot of fun for the kids. Ian is obviously a very skilled piper. If we need a bagpiper for another family event, we'll know who to call.
Ian played before and after my Mother's memorial mass. The selections were great, a great blend of both Celtic and traditional tunes. Everyone commented on what a nice touch it was and how well Ian played. We were very pleased with everything and I would absolutely recommend Ian for others' events.

Ian was great! Beautiful music, was very hot and he stayed for the whole time until pictures were done and and everyone was on the bus! A+++
I had planned to have the memorial for my husband on the nature trail beside the Still River where he loved to walk. But would a piper be willing to walk that far? Ian said "no problem". When I arrived in CT and walked the trail for the first time in 12 years, I realized how steep and uneven it was. Ian said "I love a challenge". When heavy rain flooded the trail, we ended up under a gazebo on the school playground. Ian was unfazed. Not a very magical place, but when Ian was heard coming aound the corner, it suddenly was.
Bagpiper
Ian did a fabulous job, punctual, flexible, piped as we walked to a field to scatter ashes and during the ceremony as we did the actual scattering. Chose perfect music, was an incredible addition to the gathering and overall event.

He played three different times in two different locations. Book with confidence.

Ian Underwood was our bagpiper for our graduation event and he was awesome! We thoroughly enjoyed his playing and he even played Pomp & Circumstance along with more traditional selections. My family was so pleased. He was professional, on time and very kind especially to my toddler niece who was fascinated by him and his playing and insisted on “singing” along. What a great experience - we recommend him highly!
Bagpiper
Ian was an amazing piper and helped us celebrate a few very important events all in one occasion. He paid close attention to my directions as it was important for him to be a surprise to my family and friends. I asked him if he could just appear without making his presence known before he palyed and he did just that. My family was bawling their eyes out because he helped with a major element of surprise.
Music was flawless and he knew all of our requests! He was very friendly and chatted with the kids! HIGHLY RECCOMEND HIM!!!!

What to Expect
I am extremely flexible and open to almost any performance arrangement. Here are the standard types of services that I provide for a few common types of events.
WEDDING CEREMONIES
Typically the pipes are played outside the church or venue for 15 minutes as guests arrive, and then again as everybody is leaving, for another 15 minutes. This is the standard arrangement, however upon request I can pipe the bride down the aisle. I can also play for the cocktail hour, if requested.
FUNERALS
Piping before and after the church service for about 15 minutes. This can also be done at the grave site, or can be at both locations, if desired. Slower, somber music is generally played, sometimes including piobaireachd selections.
PARTIES
For parties of various types, I will play for the specified amount of time. Repertoire would be upbeat and varied, from marches to jigs and MSR performance sets. I treat these types of situations as concerts. I'm always open to surprise parties, coordinated events, and the like.
REGARDING PRICING
My minimum fee is the type of rate that I would charge for a short or surprise performance of 5-10 minutes, within a 15-20 minute drive, either fairly short notice or happening earlier in the day, and incurs no bridge/road tolls. In other words, peak convenience. Weddings, funerals, and many other types of events will come in at a higher rate based on time commitment, travel, and time of year, so please do not take offense when a higher quote comes in. If you ask me to play for a shorter time for a reduced price, I may be able to accommodate such a request. However, my quote cannot be cut in half if a client asks for 30 minutes instead of 60, for example. When I perform, the majority of my time that day is spent putting on the uniform and driving to the event. Whether I play for 30 or 60 minutes, that's only a half hour difference in a day where my round trip could be as many as four or five hours of driving. Thank you for your consideration.
REGARDING REQUESTS
I am open to requests. However, it should be noted that most pop music is not well suited to the bagpipes, as the range of the melodies typically exceed the range of the bagpipes, which consists of only nine notes. I will make the effort to adapt suitable pop melodies to the pipes, however.
REGARDING TRAVEL
I sometimes receive notes from potential clients informing me that they hired somebody else that was located closer to them. I always submit quotes that incorporate my travel time, so I would encourage anybody looking for a piper to book based on quality and experience, rather than logistical convenience. I travel far and wide to perform, and I do it full time.
REGARDING ADDITIONAL MUSICIANS
I do not work with additional pipers and/or drummers. It introduces too many variables and adds a great deal of work to secure other musicians, and then hope that they don't cancel, as add-on players so often do. When playing with other pipers, I am limited to 5-10% of my normal repertoire, and there is no guarantee that our chanters and reeds will tune with each other. It is better, from a musical standpoint and from an administrative one, to perform as a soloist, and that's the way I keep it.
COMMON REQUESTS UNPLAYABLE ON THE BAGPIPES:
- Ave Maria
- The Star Spangled Banner (God Bless America can be substituted)
About
I began taking an interest in the bagpipes when I was in fourth grade. By the time I was in fifth grade, I was taking lessons and joining the local pipe band in Litchfield, CT. The thing that really got me interested was a band called Wolfstone, which blended traditional music with heavy, borderline arena rock arrangements.
Jeff Miller was my teacher for many years. When I was about 12 or 13, I spent an intense two weeks at the Gaelic College in Nova Scotia, and had the opportunity to study under who I regard as the best living piper, Angus MacColl. One of the classes I desperately wanted to take was the smallpipe class, but every spot was full except the most advanced class. I was granted a waiver and joined in a class that was way above my head. This was one of the best things that happened during my time at the college, as it pushed me in ways I hadn't been pushed before.
After high school I attended and earned a Professional Music degree from Berklee College of Music in 2009, where my principal instrument was electric bass. While living in Boston, I spent a year playing with the grade 2 Stuart Highland Pipe Band.
In addition to the bagpipes, I am a very active performer with wedding, tribute, and original bands in the New York metro area playing electric and double bass. I am also a busy private instructor, with guitar, bass, piano, and bagpipe students.
As a full-time musician, I am dedicated to being the best at what I do. Piping is my first love, and I aim to show that through every performance.
