We were having a book signing event about a Japanese artist and hired Kozue to perform Koto music. She arrived on time and played flawlessly for two hours non stop. Everyone was intrigued and fascinated by the haunting yet beautiful melodies she performed. It was the perfect background music. Everyone applauded when she finished. She is a true artist.
Kozue was the most brilliant and captivating Koto musician I have ever seen! She is graceful and musically gifted! There’s is nothing more encompassing than to have the privilege of hearing music from the Japanese culture! She also shared the history of her instrument and Koto music. Truly a wonderful experience right in our home!

Kozue played beautifully with the Japanese
Bamboo flutist. The service just ended 45 minutes ago and I couldn't wait to give them a 5 STAR rating. On time, professional, wore kimonos, and the guests loved them.
She came to our school and played music that captivated first, second and third graders. She also explained in a child friendly the history of the Koto, how it was made and how it is played. She taught them a few Japanese words as well. I would highly recommend her for a school performance to help students learn about both music and Japan.
My husband and I wanted some authentic Japanese koto music for our dinner reception. I searched extensively online and came across Kozue Matsumoto’s profile on Gigsalad and booked her right away. She was very flexible with our music requests, including “September” by Earth Wind & Fire, which my husband really wanted to have. The music was very relaxing & pleasant and a nice accompaniment for our cocktail hour & reception. She and her viola duet partner were on time and very courteous. We would not hesitate to book her again for future celebrations.

I hired the Japanese Koto Music to play at a Japanese themed Happy Hour at a Senior Living Community. The musician Kozue was very kind, and an extremely talented koto musician. The music was so peaceful and beautiful sounding. Kozue also spoke about the history of her koto instrument and her traditional kimono gown that she wore. She answered all questions that our residents had and it was a very educational and enjoyable experience. Everyone was so pleased, thank you so much!

Born and raised in Tohoku area in Japan and having lived in Tokyo as well, Kozue is now based in the Los Angels area. She has played koto since she was three years old under Ikuta-ryu Miyagi-kai and holds a semi-master title. She has also played shamisen and shinobue since she was small.
In North America, she has been collaborating with various musicians, dancers, visual artists, and other artists. Not only does she play traditional/contemporary/experimental music, but she also improvises, composes, and creates digital arts.
she has studied improvisation, composition, and technology under Susan Allen, Vinny Golia, and Eyvind Kang, and Ajay Kapur, and graduated with her M.F.A. in Performer-Composer at California Institute of the Arts.
