Jared Mauck finds comedy in the ordinary things of his life. His issues with weight. His time living in a trailer park. Marriage. Parenthood. Kids who have meltdowns at Denny’s or Walmart. Dealing with customers. Work in a factory and as a telemarketer.

It’s all comic gold to the Dallas-area comic.
The grandson of a pastor who planted some 50 churches in Texas and Oklahoma in his career, Mauck found himself preaching at church functions and youth camps.

“I loved to make people laugh. . . . I loved being in front of an audience,” he recalled. “At youth camps, I’d preach and make everybody laugh, but I’d cut out the going-to-hell part.”

He attended a St. Louis Bible college for about a year before deciding preaching was not for him. A series of jobs followed before he settled into sales, but Mauck found himself gravitating back to making people laugh.
He started going to comedy clubs on weekends and occasional nights to do some standup comedy. About five years ago, he realized he was good at what he liked.

“I told my wife I can do this for a living,” said the father of two children. She backed his decision and Mauck has since assembled a career from standup gigs, corporate shows and writing jokes. He’s appeared on television’s “Last Comic Standing” and his jokes have appeared on “The Tonight Show.”

Part of his appeal is an act that he can keep clean, something family audiences and businesses appreciate.
This show will draw from his personal experience, but his corporate and private shows sometimes come with specific requests. Such was the case with the Midwest tractor company that hired him to perform for its employees and customers.

“Let me tell you: There are no tractor jokes,” Mauck said. So he opted to joke about people who liked tractors. The problem: His audience was filled with people who loved tractors.
Then there was the outdoor show in Iowa next to a dairy farm where he couldn’t tell if his flat jokes were met either by audience booing or nearby cows mooing.
most shows won’t have tractors or cows, but Mauck will stick to what he knows best. “Come and laugh and hear how my life sucks,” he said.
