Menal Kidane – Founder of Jebena Joy Cafe
With a deep love for tradition and community, Menal Kidane founded Jebena Joy Cafe to bring the rich cultural experience of Eritrean & Ethiopian coffee ceremonies to events across Los Angeles and beyond. Originally from Eritrea, Menal grew up surrounded by the time-honored practice of roasting, brewing, and sharing coffee—a ritual that fosters connection, conversation, and hospitality.
At Jebena Joy Cafe, we recreate this experience with freshly roasted coffee, brewed in a traditional jebena, and served with warmth and authenticity. Our setup includes traditional snacks, creating a truly immersive experience for guests. Whether it’s a wedding, corporate event, private gathering, or cultural festival, our goal is to bring people together through the art of coffee.

Jebena Joy Cafe is more than just coffee—it’s about celebrating culture, building connections, and creating unforgettable moments.

Technical Requirements for Jebena Joy Cafe
Our coffee ceremony is a mobile setup, allowing us to bring the experience to any location. To ensure a smooth and authentic service, we require the following:
• Space Requirements: A minimum of 6x6 feet for our setup, including the coffee station and seating area (if applicable).
• Ventilation: If indoors, proper ventilation is needed due to the roasting process, which produces aromatic smoke.
• Table or Surface: A sturdy table or space to set up our traditional coffee ceremony equipment. We can provide a table upon request.
• Power Source (Optional): If additional lighting or a heating element is needed, access to a standard electrical outlet is appreciated but not always required.
• Seating (Optional): For a fully immersive experience, we recommend a few chairs or cushions for guests to gather around the ceremony.
Our setup is adaptable for both indoor and outdoor events. If you have any specific venue requirements, we’re happy to coordinate and customize the experience to fit your event needs.
Since Jebena Joy Cafe provides a traditional coffee ceremony experience rather than a musical performance, a set list isn’t necessary in the typical sense. However, we can describe the flow of the coffee ceremony as a structured experience:
Typical Coffee Ceremony Flow:
1. Bean Roasting – Fresh green coffee beans are roasted in front of guests, filling the air with rich aromas.
2. Grinding the Coffee – The roasted beans are traditionally ground by hand.
3. Brewing in the Jebena – The ground coffee is brewed slowly in a traditional clay jebena.
4. Serving the Coffee – Coffee is gracefully poured into small cups and served alongside traditional snacks.
5. Three Rounds of Coffee – Guests can enjoy Abol (first round), Tona (second round), and Bereka (third round), symbolizing hospitality and connection.
While we do not provide live music, we can incorporate soft traditional Eritrean & Ethiopian music in the background to enhance the ambiance.

The time-honored practice of roasting, brewing, and sharing coffee has been passed down for generations, and we are proud to continue this tradition.
We are influenced by the hospitality and storytelling that are central to coffee ceremonies, where every cup represents connection, community, and culture. The artistry of traditional coffee preparation, from the careful roasting of beans to the graceful pouring from a jebena, guides our approach to creating an authentic and immersive experience.
In addition, we draw inspiration from modern event experiences that celebrate cultural diversity, allowing us to blend tradition with elegance, making each event unique and memorable.
