Clean, observational stand-up comedy, with a cerebral bent, a musical background, and a social justice framework. Church-friendly.
Jelani did a great job setting up the total package today. You definitely made it personal to our audience. Your comic humor timing was good, topics and variety were good, personal stories were good, well the list could go on and on. I hope you enjoyed your time with us as well. I am glad you got to engage with our Gresham community as you mentioned you wanted to do. It's rare that a professional wants to truly make an impact in the community they are performing in.
Our church recently celebrated its 50th Anniversary, and to add to the festivities, we invited JG the Comic to do a comedy set. JG the Comic was hilarious! He was relatable, insightful, and has a natural (and well-honed) talent for "finding the funny" in everyday life. We have never laughed so hard together as a community, which elevated a special event to a whole different level of joy!
I booked JG Comic for a night of worship & Celebration event in the park. He went above and beyond the call of duty. He was very helpful in the implementation of the promotional flyer and keeping me on track with other logistical requirements. He responded immediately to all correspondence and was punctual to the performance location. He was very accommodating to serve as the EMCEE/DJ in addition to making an appearance as a comedian and psalmist in a group during the event. Upon arrival, I was very pleased with his ability to immediately established a rapport with the sound technician to ensure a high quality of sound. He also ensured every performer conducted a sound check prior to the start of the event. Even with a slight mishap during the event, he was quick to engage the attendees to keep them entertained until music resumed.
The comedy act could have been a little bit more appropriate for the event. Overall, the attendees had a wonderful time at the event.
Response from JG the Comic:
Thanks Catherine, I appreciate your feedback, and I'm glad I was able to serve.
Professional, prompt, and funny!
Jelani was a wonderful performer and very accommodating to the digital experience we needed for our work from home employees. His jokes were witty and engaged the audience. We are very thankful that he was able to entertain us during this time.
Jelani was the Emcee and DJ for our annual NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet and did a fabulous job. He set the right tone for the banquet - he added humor - was inspirational - and DJ'd music that everyone enjoyed. He was an integral part of making the evening a success!
Response from JG the Comic:
Thanks so much Wendy! It was a great privilege to come and serve you all.
JG,
This was a great night of laughter and music. We hope to have you back in the future.
Deacon,
Brian Whistler
JG is professional and personal. He arrived ahead of schedule and was ready to go when the event started. He also brought two other comics with him that were hilarious!! And as a bonus, he did original HipHop with another artist friend!! I highly recommend JG for your comedy event!!
Response from JG the Comic:
Thanks so much, Palmer! Your folks were so much fun... it was my first time performing in Estacada, but trust me when I tell you, your church made a great impression on me and my friends. We'd love to make this an annual thing... maybe team up with another church in the area? Just a thought.
Anyway... thanks again!
JG entertained our department gathering and was fantastic. I cannot recommend him higher! Very funny, very relatable and had the room in the palm of his hand. We had a really great time being entertained by JG. In addition, Jelani was extremely easy to work with - he arrived on time, was ready to go and contributed to the evening's entertainment flowing seamlessly. Very professional, very great guy. Wow. Just an amazing evening. Thank you thank you thank you!!
Response from JG the Comic:
Thanks again Dixie, I was so busy earlier this year I didn't get a chance to respond to this review! I had a great time, and I would love to come back. :)
We hired JG for a comedy night that doubled as a community outreach project. He did incredibly well working with a more conservative group of people, and it was still hilarious for the youth who were there. It was a really engaging and interactive experience as he led us in very amusing games that involved the crowd! All in all, everyone had an awesome time! Thanks JG!
JG the comic was a great fit for our event, he had material perfectly suited for the crowd and was exceptionally easy to work with!
Price Range: $250 to $500
Gig Length: 10 - 90 minutes
Languages: English
JG can be:
--- an effective host/emcee, providing light commentary and banter between acts
--- a great opening act, with a variety of short-to-medium length bits for tight sets (5 to 7 minutes)
--- an engaging featured performer, mixing in more of a storytelling format along with some of the shorter bits, for a really fun extended set (8-12 minutes)
--- a commanding headliner, with a combination of broad, self-effacing humor, incisive social commentary, and several killer longer story-style bits, for a longer set (20-25 minutes)
He also incorporates his singing prowess into his act, and in scenarios where a piano or keyboard is present, can incorporate songs and musical interludes into a more audience-participation format.
Jelani Greenidge (a.k.a. JG the Comic) is a veteran speaker and musician with over two decades of performing experience, including six years of stand-up comedy. His previous career as a worship musician makes him an ideal choice for church crowds, but he's also played in a variety of clubs and bars around his native Portland. He's a graduate of the Alex Falcone ComedySportz Stand-Up Class of 2013, a performer in Helium Comedy's Portland's Funniest Contest, and has most recently spearheaded a new hybrid hip-hop / comedy showcase called Beats & Jokes.
As a comic, I can work with any professional grade sound system but I would prefer to bring my own. Especially if you're interested in doing any combination of music and comedy, for small-to-medium size rooms I have my own four speaker setup (a pair of 12s with subs underneath) and a laptop DJ controller rig that I use to control music cues.
