My main goal since I got sick has been to become a public speaker and talk to high school and college aged kids about vaccinations for bacterial meningitis. In 2010, I lost both hands and both feet to the disease. All of this could have been prevented with one simple vaccination. I also want to help people dealing with amputations who may think that life doesn't go on. I walk every day and I'm here to say that you can't give up, no matter what.

My name is Kendra Creek. I'm 31 years old, and on May 1, 2010, I contracted bacterial meningitis. Soon after I woke up from a two week long medically induced coma, I was told they would have to amputate both hands and both feet. I spent 3 months in hospitals and a rehabilitation center, having surgery after surgery. After being discharged, I learned how to walk again with prosthetics and I still struggle daily with many tasks that most would consider normal. I have caregivers through 2 different companies that help with daily tasks, such as showering, appointments, food preparation, household chores, and many other things.
My main focus in my life is to stay positive and be grateful for the many blessings that still come to me. I'm engaged to a wonderful man who treats me with respect and love, and he is my best friend. We have an apartment together and live on our own, which is something neither of us ever thought would be possible. We are getting married on September 7th. I work out with my personal trainer once or twice a week. I would never change what happened to me. It led to the happiness I have now and I wouldn't change anything about it. I won't say that it's been easy; it definitely has not. But it has made me the person I am today, and I love her.
I don't have any formal training, but I have spoken at a few events and would like to continue growing my audience. I do advocate for vaccines, as I believe they should be required. The law was changed in Indiana after my case to require 6th graders to receive a booster shot for bacterial meningitis. I hope to inspire people of all ages. I just want everyone to know that they really can get through anything. It may be difficult, it may be the worst day you've ever had, but it doesn't have to be the end. 6ou don't have to give up hope.
I take about 30-45 minutes to tell the whole journey. I can't hold a microphone, so I will most likely need a stand if it is a large group of people. I probably won't be able to stand the whole time, so some sort of seating would be required.
Contracting bacterial meningitis has changed my life. In all honesty, some days are really hard. Everything I do is for a reason. My life has been changed for the better because now I can help people.
