A powerhouse vocal talent with an eclectic range of covers and unique original songs. At home most on stage, she performs with the same amount of energy and passionate fire whether in front of 10 people or 1,000. Accompanying herself on guitar, Rizzo is a fresh and young addition to any local venue's bill or backyard party.
Rizzo has been singing since birth and performing (on top of a toy box) since age 4. Dealing with anxiety & depression disorders and trauma as a teenager led to her discovering art and poetry as a coping mechanism. Attending college for Photography, she learned to hone her artistic identity into personal photo projects, and it eventually boiled over to her approach to music as well.
Maddy spent four years with her collegiate a Capella group, Vocal Accent, and was surrounded by motivated, creative, and powerfully weird women who lived to sing. She learned to use her voice as an instrument, trust her natural ear, improvise, vocal percussion, performance, and to emote a whole story with just syllables. Rizzo noticed her art and interests shifting towards music, but was unable to fit the pieces together to create anything presentable until recently.
As a songwriter, she writes directly from personal experience, usually as a way of dealing with too many emotions at all the wrong times. Since graduating college, she’s begun putting her poetry to music and playing guitar, utilizing her extensive passion for music and lifetime of singing experience to create her most honest work yet.
A dual-nature of new and old, modern and vintage, Rizzo blends her often conflicting influences together with blunt honesty and self-aware humor. A soul out of time, Rizzo is a strange amalgamation of the last century of American music and history. Inspired by Golden Hollywood, drag, the silent era/jazz age, and 1977-era punk. She credits mocking bird-ing along to her favorite records over and over again as her teacher, and singing with her mother as her inspiration. Influences are wide-reaching and include The Clash, Joe Strummer, Talking Heads, Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Pixies, Patti Smith, David Byrne, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Ann Peebles, Janelle Monae, Aretha Franklin, Joan Jett, Television, Jessica Hernadaz & the Deltas, Nina Simone, Marina, Dinah washington, The Specials, Esperanza Spalding, Nirvana, Lizzo, Aesop Rock, Kendrick Lamar, the Orwells, Fiona Apple, Smashing Pumpkins, the Dixie Chicks, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Regina Spektor, Theda Bara, Hedy Lamar, Judy Garland, Lauren Bacall, Sofia Loren.
