Overview

Motown Throwdown is a powerhouse soul band steeped in the traditions of soul, funk, pop, rock, R&B, and jazz. The 5-piece funk machine consists of siren Aisha Kenyetta, sax-man and vocalist Mike Quinn, guitarist Dave Grimm, Stuart White on drums and the inimitable Corey Stephens on bass. With roots in the soul tradition of Motown, the Throwdown often defies genre or category, exploding into improvisation.

What to Expect

We work closely with each client, whether it be a wedding planner, soon-to-be newlyweds or a corporate client, to learn about their vision for the event and how we can help manifest that vision into one of the greatest nights of their lives.

In terms of our actual on stage performance, our main goal is to get people dancing!! We are hell-bent on reading the crowd in real time and we respond to their energy, sometimes even blurring the line between the performer and audience! We want everyone to feel like they are part of something truly special. No two performances are the same - we don't just plow ahead with a pre-prescribed set list; our performances are exciting and interactive. More than anything else, we are excited to be onstage and do the thing we love the most!

We offer band sizes ranging from 5-15+ pieces, and can provide a wide range of additional services including ceremony music, cocktail hour, auxiliary PA setups, and full production including staging, sound and lighting. The sky is the limit in terms of production! Our basic PA and lighting packages are included automatically in our base pricing. We offer a wide variety of services and have the resources to make just about any musical dream of yours come to life. If you'd like input we are happy to guide you in a direction that we think would be home run!

Motown Throwdown is a powerhouse soul band steeped in the traditions of funk, soul, pop, rock, R&B, and jazz. This outfit of veteran heavyweights has established itself as a leader in the Charleston music scene, beginning with their long time residency at the Charleston Pour House. With vast experience in nearly every context of entertainment, from weddings to festivals, the Throwdown approaches each performance with unique integrity, tailored to the client or audience. As the name implies, the music is born within the Motown soul tradition, but manifests itself in a plethora of unique styles and arrangements from across the musical spectrum. Expect an enormously energetic performance with ripping solos, soulful vocals, and catchy, synchronized melodies on top of a thick, relentless funk driven core. Also, expect to dance and be WILDLY entertained.

Additional Booking Notes

We are a one stop shop for all of your production needs. We offer a variety of different production packages to choose from. Some of our clients are already providing staging, and our stage requirements depend on the band size booked. Production requirements greatly depend on the type of event, the guest count, the venue, and the band size booked.

This is just an example of what set might include - you will see a LOT of Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder on there. We love them.

We don't really have a master list of tunes - our repertoire is pretty huge! In terms of song selection, we pride ourselves on being able to read the crowd and play accordingly, so we do prefer it if you don't write out our set lists. However, having said that, we love direction, so please feel free to let us know a handful of songs you love and or songs you hate, or a couple of statements like "no classic rock" or "we love classic rock" or "we hate abba" or "we love abba" as this is really helpful as it gives us an idea of the direction in which to take the music over the course of the night. The more we know the better! Don’t hold back! If we know them, we’ll play them :)
