I am a survivor. I will help bring awareness on Mental Illness and Suicide Prevention within your community. I will help my peers know that it is okay to stop hiding their illness behind closed and start healing. I will help my peers overcome their fear of others knowing that they suffer from any form of Mental Illness or have had Suicidal thoughts. I will help my peers know that they are not standing alone and that 4 out of 5 people have either thought or attempted suicide. I will help my community, the black community know it is okay to reach out for "help", it is okay "to air the dirty laundry" and that it is okay to say " I suffer from depression." I will let my peers know that it is time to break generational curses. I will let my peers know that until you defeat your #1 enemy, you will never heal properly.
My name is Christina T Nance. I reside in Omaha, Nebraska. I am a Peer Support Wellness Specialist, a motivational speaker, 2015 Beacon of Light winner, a published author and a SURVIVOR of my suicide attempt.
I am married to my handsome husband James Nance, Sr. I have two beautiful children Jayla and Malik, plus my bonus children who I love dearly.
In my book, No More Closed Doors, I share my depression and suicide attempt. I speak about overcoming my illness. The book may be purchased online at (link hidden) or at (link hidden) or (link hidden).
I want to create change by breaking generational cycles within families. I want to help my community, the black community to STOP hiding behind closed doors and seek proper help. I am not saying other ethnic backgrounds don’t deal with Mental Illness, but within the black community the only time we want to acknowledge that there is something wrong is when one of our own is in some sort of trouble. We mainly do this because we don’t want to be labeled, not realizing we are already labeled by the color of our skin, the way we wear our hair, our income, the way we talk, our everything.
I hope to travel the world one day to share my testimony with others suffering from a Mental Illness. I have faith that my testimony will inspire someone just like me. It will help them walk into their illness and no longer care what others think of them. It will help them to live in their truth. It will help them understand that their illness doesn’t define them as individual.
I allowed my illness to control me because I was scared…
…I am NOT my illness, I am a SURVIVOR.
