From Bluegrass to Beatles, jigs to jazz, Paul expertly plays music you might not expect hear on the banjo. An Ohio Arts Council Master Artist, he's performed with Bill Monroe & Roy Clark, to name only a few. The banjo can be a very expressive instrument, and Paul's ability to play music from multiple genres, quick & exciting, slow & beautiful, makes him an ideal choice for weddings, cocktail hours, dinners, parties & more.
Paul played a prelude for a Roman Catholic Memorial Mass. I wish I had taken photos. His knowledge about the history of the banjo offered an additional dimension to his presentation. I hope to book Paul for other occasions. Thank you, Paul.

Over the years, Paul Kovac has lead his own bands, from 2 to 6 pieces, but his solo work brings a certain charm, often lost in a larger ensemble. Though a multi-instrumentalist, Paul loves how expressive the banjo can be, played solo. Listeners often remark how they love the variety of songs and styles. Kovac's solo banjo music can be a keen touch for cocktail hours, dinner music, private parties, themed events, or anytime acoustic music, wether background, causal or in concert, is wanted. He mostly plays without any sound reinforcement, but bringing a small PA system can be negotiated.
Paul Kovac was born into a musical family, on a farm in rural Ohio, where still resides today. An Ohio Arts Council Master Musician, he's been fortunate to have toured on three continents, and has performed with legends, Roy Clark, Bill Monroe, Garrison Keillor, and many others. Paul's mastery on several stringed instruments makes him a valuable musician to have around.
His recent recording, "Ohio Bluegrass: From the Appalachian Plateau", focuses on original music in a traditional style, but Paul's interests are broad. Recently, playing music from around the world, on the banjo, has piqued his interest. "Though unique, it's a musical instrument that's often stereotyped. It's fun to interpret non-banjo music, on the banjo ... people are often surprised", Kovac says.
Live, his vast experience, high skills and charm are on display.
Paul Kovac is comfortable nearly anywhere and makes himself at home. He can perform, sitting on a stool in the corner of a house, on a stage (minimum 8x8), and inside or outside (not in direct sun, and not on grass when electricity is used). He's played music on world class stages, concert halls, and also in basements, on patios, and under mature oak trees ... what ever the need.
Playing purely acoustically is always the first choice, Paul can provide a PA system for larger areas, for an additional fee. (one grounded 20amp outlet needed)
He does not require any special lighting.
