Hi! I'm Phil! I have over 38 years of experience as a photographer and 22 professionally. My passion is to help you capture life's most beautiful moments! My main focus is on weddings, parties, engagement shoots and proposals.
I have a full lighting kit as well as the latest in full frame cameras (don't ask how many, I'm embarrassed!)
Please get in touch to have me capture your event or portrait session, newborn session, first birthday party or surprise proposal in images you will treasure and an experience you will remember.
I am new here but have been a Top Pro at Thumbtack since 2019 with a 4.999 star review average from almost 200 reviews.
Phil has a wonderful personality and was willing and able to work with 3 babies, including one very uncooperative toddler. He was able to find the best locations for photos and captured candid photos of kids while we were getting lined up for the big family pictures, which I was not expecting but were very nice.
Response from Phil Rose Photography:
Hey, thanks Nicole! I think it was a great shoot and your family were lovely despite the drippy weather and kids being kids!
Our wedding photos are so beautiful!!!! Phil did an amazing job, I'm so thankful! I can't believe how incredible the outside photos came out. It was so bright outside in the direct sunlight, and yet the photos are just stunning. Phil really has a talent! And I'm in love with the black and white photos he took! I originally only wanted colored photos, which he said if he did any black and white, it would would be for fun with the photo in color also available. I had no idea how much I would really enjoy the black and white photos, especially of this one with the light coming through as my husband (almost typed fiance lol) and I are standing next to each other. The indoor photos at our reception are equally as beautiful, and I'm so happy he took so many photos of the guests including our little crazy animals. Love, love, love all these photos. Thank you with a million smiles 🥰
Phil was a fantastic photographer for our wedding celebration. He stepped in at the last minute seamlessly, was extremely easy to work with, and communicated with us clearly and frequently. Most importantly, the photos he took were absolutely phenomenal and captured the magic of the event perfectly. We would absolutely recommend Phil and would hire him again in a heartbeat.
Response from Phil Rose Photography:
Thanks so much, Julia. It was an honor to work with you guys for what was an extraordinary reception! So much fun!
I booked a session with Phil Rose for a professional headshot to use on LinkedIn, Zoom, and some professional conference sites. It looks really lovely, with high quality lighting and slight retouching that makes me look polished but still like myself. I get compliments on it all the time! Thanks, Phil!
Response from Phil Rose Photography:
Thanks so much, Lola. It was a true pleasure to meet you and I'm so glad you are pleased with my work!
Phil did a photo shoot with our dog when he was unwell. He was extremely patient and produced a great set of photos. He is technically very skilled, and had extensive lighting. It must have been a difficult job for him as our dog is nearly all black. We ended up with some wonderful portraits. Phil is very personable, considerate and empathetic. I could see him being perfect for weddings and so on. Highly recommended
Response from Phil Rose Photography:
Thanks so much, Andy. It was a pleasure to work with you and Dougal!

This is a very difficult piece to write.
Every shoot is custom quoted and what I would tell a real estate agent looking for a shoot of a small condo would be very different than what I would say to a bride planning the eight hour shoot for the day of her life!
Having said that, this is the text from the 'How Does a Shoot Work page of my website. I hope this helps but, if not, do please get in touch!
While I am with you I am at your disposal within the parameters discussed before the shoot. This means that we can change location, your outfits etc as many times as you would like and as the scheduled shoot time allows.
There is no limit to the number of shots taken during a shoot. I am often shooting at 15 frames/second just to capture exactly the right expression and the right moment.
After the shoot I will go through all the images and pick out the good ones. These will all go through post processing (Photoshop) before you see them. They will then be uploaded to an online gallery with a link and a password which I will send to you. From this gallery you can download all the photographs in their full, high resolution. I do not hold your photographs hostage to make you buy prints although you can buy prints directly from the gallery and they do an excellent job of printing and I make a small cut when clients do that so I like it but do not expect it. You can send this link and password on to friends and family and they can do the same. They can download photographs and buy prints.
In terms of number of shots you can expect to receive, here is a short list of shoot styles along with an average number of shots you might expect to receive. Please note this is advisory only and is not a guarantee but rather just where it tends to fall in terms of number.
Weddings- 50 photographs/shooting hour.
Parties/corporate events-70 photographs/shooting hour.
Portrait sessions- 20-30 photographs.
Real estate-30-40 photographs.
I will quote you a price when we speak on the phone. If it sounds good the next step is to create a quote which comes with no obligation. I will ask for and send that to your e-mail address. If the quote looks good to you and you would like to book me I will ask for half the fee (excluding tax) to book the date and the rest will be due on or by the day or before I can deliver the final images. You can see payment options at this page.
Galleries are guaranteed to stay live for one year so you can come back and grab your images as many times as you like. I actually still have 15 year old galleries up so realistically they will stay up longer than one year but if I get run down by a bus and stop paying the bills they would disappear!
I think that's it! Feel free to get in touch if you have any other questions and I hope to shoot with you! Oh, I do tend to fill up fairly fast so I would recommend booking at least a month in advance in the summer and two weeks in the winter (off season).
I am not a big snob who refuses to look at other people's work and, in fact, it really helps to see images that inspire you so I can have a sense of the direction you would like to go in. Some clients find Pinterest a great tool for this. No pressure and this is totally optional but it can really help to lead to your getting images you love!
I am an English man who has lived in the Pacific Northwest for 24 years.
I was a somewhat lost youth in the 1980s looking for direction. I wanted to be in a punk rock band but I was too unmusical even to be in a punk rock band! A sad situation indeed. But then Steve Manford, a fine fellow and friend, told me that if I took up photography, I could HANG OUT with punk rock bands. Genius. And so I picked up a Chinon C4 which was an own brand camera that took Pentax lenses. Pretty soon I upgraded to the Pentax ME Super which still sits above my fireplace. It now underexposes somewhat but I still stare fondly at it on occasion!
I soon bought a Mamiya C330 medium format camera and began to document London of the early 1990s and fell deeply in love with photography as a medium. I built a darkroom in the dusty brick cellar of my East London house and inhaled more poisons than was probably wise.
In 1992 I moved to Edinburgh and attended the Edinburgh College of Art and it's School Of Visual Communication. I got my degree in 1998 and then went to the Burning Man Festival in Nevada in 2000, met the mother of my daught and moved to Bellingham to get married in 2001.
The rest is history. Well, all that was history too! But anyway, now you know just a little of how I, an Englishman, ended up in the Fourth Corner, photographing all kinds of everything and I hope you will let me photograph something for you too!
I'm going to use this as a spot to get nerdy for my fellow nerds and list all the equipment I bring to bear within my work.
Cameras.
Sony A7iii full frame body. Sony A7rii full frame body. These are attached to my waist during most shoots to allow for easy access to the bodies with the below lenses...
Sigma 24-70mm f2. 8 DG DN Art lens.
Sony FE 70-200mm F2. 8 GM OSS II Master Lens (be still, my beating heart and emptying bank account!)
I have a Sony A7 R full frame camera with a Samyang 14mm f2. 8 lens attached for real estate work.
I have a 7Artisans 50mm f0. 95 lens for close up work and portraiture and a Sony A6400 body to carry it so that it is always available without having to switch lenses on cameras.
I have the Sony RX10 Mkiv which I use for proposals and as a backup in case of breakdown of one of my other cameras. The reason I use it for proposals is that it has a MASSIVE long zoom range in a small body so I still look like a tourist rather than a photographer stalking the potential fiance!
I have three Neewer flash heads which fit on the bodies but also a relatively lightweight lighting kit (stands and softboxes) for easy setup for portraits and so on.
I have a full, three light Alien Bees lighting set with umbrellas, zoot, backdrops etc for bigger set ups.
I have a Maverick Mini Drone for real estate work and a DJI Pocket 2 handheld 3-axis gimbal 4K camera for video walk throughs of real estate.
I also have a sense of understanding that all this is of less than no interest to the majority of my clients and I promise not to tell you about any of them unless you ask me to!
