I delved deeper into music in high school. As a senior, I dreaded a semester of "Home Ec" after my final season of football. I hatched a plan with four other team mates and transfered to the class with the girls we coveted across from the weight room...modern dance.
I thought it would be just an eye candy session. Little did we realize that we had all inadvertently volunteered for the end of year show, where we would have to dance before the ENTIRE SCHOOL. In order to understand and assimilate a dance routine, we had to learn to count music.
I had no way to appreciate just how my life was going to change because of such a mundane skill. The following year I found myself before the wheels of steel for the very first time. I found I had a natural affinity for it Spinning vinyl to me was very natural, simple and straight forward. It was in no small part thanks to Mrs. Marron who taught me how to count music in that dance class at South Miami Senior High.
I spent every penny I could scrape up to buy my first set of turntables and a Radio Shack mixer. I practiced every chance I could and began to test the waters.
My first club expirience was - after much insistance and some begging - a couple of sets at fantastic place called Ziegfields in 1984. I was a nobody, but it gave a taste of what I might expect. I was totally unprepared for the success that was to come.
I began to learn what it was like to properly anticipate and express yourself through music...I became a true Disc Jockey.
I cut my teeth in the cosmopolitan clubs of Maracaibo (La Soca and La Conga), New York, New York (Punto Fijo), Illusion, Hawaii Kai, Shock, La Mirage (Caracas), Club 1254 (Margarita). Before returning to Miami two and a half years later in 1987, I had acquired ample knowledge of many varieties and music styles from latin to eurobeat. I was ready for primetime.
In 1987 I read a book that had a profound effect on me. That book was "Charlie Mike" by Col. Leonard Scott. I began reading about a person in that book that I felt was an embodyment of myself. Wow, that could have been me. His name was Kenneth Meeks, he used an M-79 grenande launcher with deadly prescition. His fellow soldiers nicknamed him "Thumper" because an M-79 makes an unmistakable thumping sound when it is fired.
I was so inspired by Meeks, I decided I would honor his galantry and become known as DJ Thumper. I felt it was a small way to say thank you to him and to those who have sacrificed for our Republic.
I later spun at smaller clubs like The Poodle Lounge (Fountainebleau Hilton in MB) and dives like Whistler's in Cutler Ridge. I went on to clubs like Mystique and my all time favorite... CLUB ALCAZABA in Coral Gables.
One fine day a few years back, a dear friend of mine Gus Caballero called me and asked if I would bail him out and DJ his parish's valentine's dance as they were left high and dry by an unnamed amatuer. Thankfully, I agreed. When I got back behind the wheels of steel, it was like I never left.
That was the genesis of Pro Disco DJ. Since then I have gone through many ideas and evolutions in all varieties of sound and lighting equipment. I believe the right balance has been struck, yet the cutting edge in music and equipment always demand careful attention and selection to remain fresh and exiting. Should you entrust me, I will bring all my years of expirience and skill to transform your occasion into an unforgettable event.
Thank you for your confidence,
Marcos a.k.a. "DJ Thumper"
