Red Velvet Sounds is an ensemble created by founder and bandleader Gabriela Martina accompanied by outstanding musicians living in New England and New York. I hired Red Velvet Sounds to play at my wedding. I should explain. I'm a music snob and do not live in the area. So I scoured the internet to find the perfect band to perform for our big night. As you may know, the right band can really make the night special. Even though I'd never seen them perform, I was impressed with the videos, professionalism, and courteousness of Gabriela as soon as the process began.
The wedding was incredible. I had people in their 60's and people in their 20's telling me it was the best band they'd ever heard perform at a reception. As evidence of this, from the beginning of the set to the end, people were on the dance floor. During dinner, the music was soft enough to enjoy conversations with people at our tables. Afterwards, there wasn't a moment when the dance floor wasn't packed.
Red Velvet Sounds also paid attention to every song we listed ahead of time that we wanted to hear during our big night. They were incredible. And man could they Play!

The musicians were very talented, played lovely music.... when they were playing. They took many breaks that lasted 15-20 minutes and just played an iPod during that time. During these breaks we sometimes found them mingling in the party area, easily mistaken as guests instead of contract professionals working the event. I expected more for the amount we spent.

My wife and I hired Red Velvet Sounds to play at our rehearsal dinner party the night before our wedding. My wife is Indian, I'm American. So the theme of our wedding weekend was a fusion of our two cultures. We approached Gabriela, the lead to Red Velvet Sounds, and asked if she'd be willing and able to play with someone that could do the traditional Indian music and sounds. She said she had a few friends she could reach out to. We were absolutely blown away with what she came up with! She found a young woman from Berkelee School of Music to sing the Indian songs and another man to play Indian drums. Not only did she find these people for us, they actually created original music to play together! All of our guests were absolutely blown away with the band, how well they played together, the Indian and American music, it all was so fantastic. A fine match for our diverse crowd of 300 neighborhood residents, professionals and activists gathered in a big tent in the heart of Boston. People sat up front in the chairs nearest the stage and actively enjoyed the music, following the lyrics, the beat and the singer's sinuous moves. Comments from guests were uniformly enthusiastic.
When we needed a band for our event, Red Velvet Sounds responded within half an hour. Communication up to and through the night of the event was consistent, professional, and timely. The music was perfect, and everyone enjoyed dancing along to the music. Overall, it was a perfect night!
Red Velvet Sounds performed at my nonprofit organization's 10th anniversary last night. They were outstanding in every way, and exceeding the high expectations I had of them from their website and YouTube videos. Gabriela is an incredibly talented singer in addition to being a sophisticated and graceful presence, and her band is top notch. Their attire was classy and sophisticated, and Gabriela even changed outfits between their first set (we requested jazz standards for the cocktail hour) and second set (after our presentation of speeches and awards we requested they shifted into livelier dance music). I work for a Country Club in Sharon, Ma and we have had Red Velvet Sounds here twice. We hired them for our membership Valentine's Day Dinner in 2014, and we just knew we had to have them back this year!! RVS played the perfect sets of music while our guests were dining. During the preparations for our wedding in 2012, we received recommendations about the beautiful and talented Jazz vocalist/songwriter, Gabriela Martina, from friends of ours. Gabriela Martina is a composer, arranger, and bandleader. Released in 2016 with a four-star review from DownBeat, her newest album, No White Shoes, represents a major step in the singer’s sojourn as a 21st-century musician. Martina had the opportunity to perform and collaborate with heavyweights like Meshell Ndegeocello, Jack DeJohnette, and Angelique Kidjo. She recorded with veteran drummer J.R. Robinson and was a semi-finalist in the Shure Voice Competition at the 2009 Montreux Jazz Festival, performing with guitarist Lee Ritenour’s band. Martina released a critically hailed EP in 2010, Curiosity, which included her original song “Ain’t Nobody,” a finalist in the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers Foundation Young Jazz Composer Awards in 2012. She sings in four languages (German, English, French, and Spanish) and is currently performing with various groups up and down the East Coast. Martina owns her own booking agency called Red Velvet Sounds and is cofounder and curator of the In Momentum concert series.
Martina is a social activist who is passionate about learning more about other cultures, helping to develop a sense for community, and fighting inequality and racism. She is a strong advocate of causes that promote equal human rights independent of religious or political affiliations. From 2009 to 2010, Martina was the founder and president of the Cultural Leaders Club at Berklee College of Music, where students investigated causes and effects in terms of race, gender, and ethnicity issues. Sonic Relief, which Martina cofounded, was awarded the Berklee Urban Service Award 2016 for using music to aid people in need, such as organizing a humanitarian fundraising concert for Syrian refugees, featuring Simon Shaheen and the Lee Swensen Katz Trio in December 2015.
