Overview
Singer/songwriter/comedian; I play 13 instruments and bring a handful to each venue (unless traveling by air). My audience is anyone who'll listen to me sing. I play from a repertoire of 13 CDs, 5 instrumental and 8 songwriter CDs. By 2013 I completed 25 years performing in Branson, MO , and I am now traveling, as a solo primarily. A typical venue: playing piano/guitar/banjo/dulcimer/harp & singing, telling Ozark tall tales & family traditions. Coming off recent road gigs with MM Murphey ("Wildfire", Cowboy, recent #3 Bluegrass album); & Southwestern Pilgrimage (bandmate Randy Brooks, author of "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer"! Yes, I sing it :).

Thanks, Rebecca and Chris- It was a joy playing for your wedding. Great blessings in your future together.
Rod is a talented musician and a very nice man. He played the kind of music we wanted and the instruments we requested. We received many compliments. He even stayed to accompany a friend who was singing a song for me at the end of the party. I would use him again.

Response from Rod Phillips:
Thanks Kathy. Your celebration event was a wonderful testimony to your contributions to the universities and your personal popularity. I have always liked James Taylor's "Secret of Life" and it was a good song to add to my repertoire!
Saw Rod perform a "pre-show" in Branson about a year ago. He was engaging, uplifting, fun, and quite the showman. His talent on multiple instruments, combined with an ability to involve a multi-generational audience, was obvious. This man really enjoys making music! I left feeling refreshed, and thankful that good musical experiences are still out there.
Saw Rod again three months later, when he performed with the Michael Martin Murphey band at the Oklahoma City Cowboy Christmas Ball. He soloed on several instruments, the most memorable being a beautiful harmonica solo in "Walking In a Winter Wonderland".

Response from Rod Phillips:
Thanks, Sharon Austin! I have played house concerts on two occasions at your home in Oklahoma City. The reception and reviews I received were wonderful! I have also enjoyed playing concerts at your church, First Methodist, Oklahoma City... a memorable one with my friend Brian Hargiss, when we appeared as the comedy Christian duo, "The Self-Righteous Brothers"... ha! That was a good one. Brian is now doing missions work in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.
Great time

Thank you, Maggie! I so enjoyed working with you for your daughter's wedding. We had some good ideas together! I also enjoyed meeting you and your family and the groom's family at dinner. It was great fun to find and learn a Filipino love song and have the guests enjoy it!
Rod was fantastic. Very professional. Recommend him highly.

Response from Rod Phillips:
Mary Jane: Thank you for the feedback. My wife and I very much enjoyed being at the event!
So sorry that I never got to speak with the bride, a drawback of a large event. I always try to congratulate and encourage the bride. I definitely feel a calling to contributing to a memorable celebration, one that can help carry them through the inevitable challenges. Andrea and my union through God’s grace has lasted 47 years! It is paramount that the couple have a strong spiritual base in order to survive. I pray — and suspect —that is something your daughter and her husband have!
Rod was the perfect pianist for our party celebrating the 180th anniversary of the writing of A Christmas Carol. He was dressed in Dickinsonian attire. He knew by heart all the Christmas classics. He plays beautifully and spiced up the party with his wit and sparkling personality. Very highly re3commended!

Thank you, Marietta! Sorry, I didn’t get a chance to talk to you after the ceremony.… Best of luck to both of you in the future!☺️😅
Rod was outstanding! Besides skillfully playing cello for our wedding ceremony and piano for our reception, Rod is just a nice guy. He was very professional and has a great sense of humor. We highly recommend Rod to anyone in need of a musician.

Thanks, David! I enjoyed every minute of playing your wedding. You and Beth are bound for great years and memories. Nice having a fellow Kansas guy to talk to! Thanks for having me play music for you.
We hired a Rod to play during our ceremony and it was beautiful! It was one of our most favorite parts of our wedding. Thanks for helping to make our day special!
Rod was an extremely talented musician and I was very happy to have him at our event. I received multiple compliments about his skills but also his choice of music was exceptional and he was very personable and friendly. We are a nonprofit organization and he also gave a 10% kickback to our cause and mission.
Multi-Instrumentalist
Rod performed over and above our expectations. We had provided very little in the way of specifics of our needs for a latin Mass wedding. Rod waa so flexible and acommadating of last minute changes and music needs. A true skilled professional and reacted so calmly and assuradly to last minute requirements. Its like he magically produced the needed music at the last minute. I can't praise him enough.
Organist
Response from Rod Phillips:
Thanks so much, Susan! It was a little challenging, but I had some great help and we survived! Learning a new instrument, especially pipe organs (this organ was actually an Allan electric simulation) is cause for some anxiety, so I'm happy I had some time to get some stops configured. I would have liked to play the upstairs pipe organ- maybe I'll get another chance someday. As far as the wedding Mass, It was definitely good to have the chanter right there at my elbow to keep me apprised of what was happening. The old historical church is absolutely beautiful and I took many photos. I enjoyed working with you and the entire experience. :)
Rod was flexible, able to play several different arrangements for a wedding while moving between piano and organ. In addition to being talented, he was very friendly and approachable. His sense of humor made the planning process stress free and enjoyable.

Response from Rod Phillips:
Thanks, Aaron! I enjoyed everything about your wedding, especially meeting your multi-ethnic family!
It was a joy.
We had an intimate wedding at the Stonegate Glass Chapel, which Rod played cello for. We couldn't be more pleased with our choice to hire him! The booking process was very easy and Rod was very helpful with suggestions for song placement during our ceremony. His playing was beautiful and the perfect touch to our intimate ceremony. We had the pleasure of visiting with him while we were there and he was very kind and pleasant. We would definitely request his services again in the future if an occasion calls for it.

Response from Rod Phillips:
Thanks for the kind review, Samantha. A lovely small ceremony, the best!
Hired Rod to play some Bavarian music with his accordion while we played some German food, games and had a beer garden. One game was a wiener toss and every time the wiener was tossed and caught, he would play his accordion during the throw of the wiener and got real loud as it was caught. It was hilarious. I didn't ask him to do that, he did it on his own. He got the crowd to participate in the chicken dance and a few other songs. The crowd loved him. I definitely recommend him. He said he plays 10 different instruments and was available for hire for any themed party.
Rod played beautifully at our wedding. It was just the magic touch we needed. He played exactly what we asked for.

Response from Rod Phillips:
Thanks, Gretchen. I enjoyed talking with your friends and family from Montreal and Maine. It gave the whole occasion an international flare!
Rod did a great job of interacting with the attendees and made this event very enjoyable. He is highly professional and an excellent musician. I would highly recommend him and will request him again should we repeat this function next year.

Response from Rod Phillips:
Thanks so much for your kind words, Scott. We felt right at home and people were great with their encouragement and response. Thanks also for being gracious to me and to my wife. :) She commented that you were exceptional, as hosts don't always give reinforcement and feedback during the event. Also, I didn't mind moving, as I didn't have much to move. We enjoyed Bentonville and had a great meal in a local restaurant afterward.
Rod made our event! Everyone was raving how awesome he was.

Rod was incredible- our guests and my husband and I loved his presence at our wedding! We only wish we had hired him for longer :) We had very specific song requests and he was very patient with us and made our garden wedding magical-our first dance was perfect with the cello. We recommend Rod 100%!

My husband and I cannot speak highly enough of Mr. Phillips. His performance at our reception is one of our top highlights from the day. My husband and I are both music-obsessed, been around the world seeing musicians of all kinds and calibers. YET--we had never seen anyone play the piano AND guitar AND sing at the same time like Mr. Phillips. Rod coincidentally has played with an artist we love, and gave a momentous rendition of one of our favorite songs during dinner, doing the masterpiece all the justice it deserves. The room erupted in applause. We will NEVER forget it! Forever grateful to have experienced Mr. Phillips' craft on our wedding night!

Rod was exceptional in all ways!! Preparation, communication, timeliness, and implementation! His professionalism exceeded our expectation!
I was a happy bride and his music made my wedding perfect!!!
If you are looking for a unique and serene addition to your wedding day, Rod should be your top choice!
He played both the piano and the harp for our outdoor November nighttime ceremony. He was able to play every request I had, and for the times I didn't know what to select, he had fantastic recommendations that all our guests loved. I requested Last Date, as it is my grandparents wedding song, and it nearly brought tears to our families eyes! He created a perfect atmosphere for our ceremony, and we could not have asked for a better musician. He is so easy to work with, and so knowledgeable.

Rod worked with us and the wedding venue, provided great advice, and made it possible for us to bring our vision to life. I can't provide enough praise or thanks. The cello playing was beautiful. Do not hesitate to book him.
Rod is personable, talented, and loves performing! He learned a song for us and it was beautiful! Our guests were impressed and really enjoyed the evening!

Rod Phillips was our speaker/pianist and singer/cellist player at our Veteran's Day Assembly. He is a man of many talents! He did a very professional job with speaking to our school and the veteran's. His musical talent is phenomenal. He brought tears to many eyes today. I highly recommend him as a performer!!!

Response from Rod Phillips:
Barbara, it was a treat to come to your school and deliver a PowerPoint/lecture tribute to my father and brother for Veterans Day. I loved being able to sing and play for young people and hopefully inspire them to deepen their appreciation for veterans and commitments to positive things. So this was really a memorable Gigsalad job for me! And I was being truthful when I said public school music teachers like you and the band teacher are my heroes...I loved the third grade letters to veterans and the poems and tributes to veterans from the High Schoolers.😄
Rod went out of his way to make Leah and Andres' wedding ceremony exactly what they imagined! Highly recommend! Loves what he does and is great at it!

Response from Rod Phillips:
Thanks Jessica! It was a lovely wedding and the bride and groom have my best wishes. Hope to see your beautiful wedding facility again!
Rod was super easy to work with and very professional. He worked well with the vocalist to prepare. The music was lovely! The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because there was a small glitch during the ceremony which delayed beginning a song for a long pause- a bit awkward, but all ended well! I would definitely engage rod again.
Cellist, Classical Pianist, Multi-Instrumentalist
Response from Rod Phillips:
Thanks, Monica! I enjoyed working with you, and your sister as vocalist. I am humbled and amazed at how much preparation goes into a short ceremony, as we talked and worked over a 7 month period...most people would never know how much effort goes on behind the scenes to make things work smoothly- and then a computer glitch causes a problem! (For those reading this, I create recorded background tracks to enhance the solo cello or harp, to make the sound more complete for the processional and/or vocalist accompaniment. It has worked seamlessly for many weddings. In this case, the vocal track inexplicably went away and I had to re-locate the recording, which took probably 30-40 seconds? I should have just picked up my guitar and played the vocal accompaniment live, but I didn't want to upset the vocalist, as we had not practiced the accompaniment with just guitar. The trak was piano and strings on the recording.) I have learned to expect the unexpected at a wedding! In the future, I will prepare the vocalist ahead of time for such a possibility. Regardless, thanks for inviting me to your reception, as I felt like I was really part of your celebration, esp. sitting at a table with your siblings! The wedding was lovely, Big Cedar venue is amazing, and I hope you had a great day and I wish you a great life together. :)
Rod was great to work with- start to finish. He brought a musical blessing to our wedding day. Not only is he very talented in bringing a multitude of instruments to life, his personality and character are a wonder full contribution! He was timely, communicated well, neat and tidy in set-up, interacted with guests, etc. There is not a single thing that could be considered a negative. Rod and his sweet wife were an absolute pleasure and I and my wife feel as if we have made new friends. Highly recommend!!

Thanks, Robert- for hiring me, although you did not know me- for trusting my credits and experience, the reliability of GigSalad, and the reviews from clients. I enjoyed your wedding and wish you the best in years to come!

Thanks, Teresa! I always enjoy coming to Marine Max.
Thank you Rod for a wonderful experience. I've had so many positive comments from the event already and have even been shown a few videos from the evening. Was told that Rod was very attentive to the needs of the event, the attendees and the venue and they are hoping that he will consider coming back and making this an annual event with us. A job well done. Thank you.
Banjo Player, Guitarist
Response from Rod Phillips:
Thanks, Jill! Your Bluegrass, Bourbon and BBQ event was a hit, and I'll be happy to play next year. :) I don't often get to bring four banjos to my gigs (!)- but I had tunes for all of them, plus the mandolin, cello and guitar, and even got to sing some of my own songs. Lots of fun!
Rod did a great job playing the organ for our son's wedding; he showed up early and then played faithfully for the prelude though our guests arrived a bit late and then played beautifully all the way through the ceremony when needed. Thank you, Rod!

Response from Rod Phillips:
Thank you, Kaye! It was a lovely wedding and couple in an extraordinary setting... just a bit cold outside! Glad we were inside. I enjoyed playing for the service, my first experience with a Greek Orthodox ceremony and it was beautiful and very memorable.
Rod was a wonderful performer st our Jubilee Event. He played the songs we requested. He had great interaction with the guests . I recommend him highly

Thank you, Tammy! My wife and I enjoyed your wedding event tremendously and your guests were so gracious, kind, and loving to us. Thanks so much for having me play and receiving my spouse so graciously. We enjoyed the meal and the socializing just as much!
Rod was so flexible and such a great communicator! He waiting out a rainstorm just so he could play for our outdoor wedding ceremony. All the guests were in such awe by seeing a harpist. Most of the guys really liked talking to him and would spit off a random song and he usually knew how to play it!
Harpist
Response from Rod Phillips:
Thank you Christina! Enjoyed your beautiful wedding immensely- even through the pounding rain on the tin roof!
Rod was great, he showed up on time and played beautifully. I couldn't have asked for better service. I would definitely hire him again or recommend him to anyone needing a harpist.

Response from Rod Phillips:
Thanks, Conor. Your wedding was very nice and all went well, even if we had to wait a minute for the rings to appear! The good news is, if something unusual happens at the wedding ceremony, it is a sign of a blessing on the marriage and union itself! I enjoyed playing at your ceremony, and I feel like it is a special mission of mine to be there and truly bless the couple in their lives to come! Carolina (sp?) is a beautiful young lady, it appears inside and out!
Rod, did a wonderful job playing several musical instruments, such as but not limited to the: guitar, harp, keyboard, mandolin & accordion as well as singing. He was sensitive to the crowd and seranaded us with the harp while folks were eating and he was able to read the audience well and play and sing music very beautifully that we all knew and could enjoy. He even learned a new song (just for us) and sang our favorite song in Italian! He has a gentle spirit and great humor which is hard to find these days. Thanks for making our party a success. Look forward to seeing you at our next party!

Not only was Rod's music absolutely beautiful he was such a gracious and understanding person. We thoroughly enjoyed having him here to entertain and to accompany the others singing. Thanks so much, Barbara! I very much enjoyed being there and meeting all of your wonderful people, young and old. I also enjoyed your delicious meal! If you would give me an email for Garrick, I would like to send him a personal thank-you.
I have seen Rod perform in a few different venues over the years, and I had him do most of the music in my wedding. He is incredibly talented, extremely professional, and a lot of fun! He has a keen ability to interact with the audience very personably, but he is also a commanding presence in more formal situations such as wedding ceremonies. I have only heard great reviews about his performances with no negatives. I saw his Veteran's Day tribute where he played 13 instruments in just a few minutes--amazing!!
I would very highly recommend Rod when any type of live musical performance is needed.
Classical Pianist, Guitarist, Multi-Instrumentalist, Singer/Songwriter
Response from Rod Phillips:
Thanks for the kind words, Brenda Herrman! I remember your wedding well… so much music, almost like a concert… and another great memory, the Veteran's Day concert honoring 90-year-old Ron Phillips, one of the few remaining WWII vets. Hey- I would like to offer you a house concert at your very nice home with 30+ guests and a specially-designed program just for the Herrmans… maybe we could join forces for a few songs! with guest appearances from your Hollywood son and Thespian husband (arggggh!)
Rod entertains about 12 times a year for groups that I host. These are groups that come to Branson to learn about the show business there and Rod is one of our presenters. He is extremely well-received and very, very talented. He is very engaging and communicates well with the audience. We have had him for several years and have no plan to discontinue his presentation with us.

Response from Rod Phillips:
Thanks, Barbara! I have enjoyed so much playing for Branson Show Biz and its sister programs for the past ten years or so… it's mind-boggling to think of the areas of the country that were represented in those tours: North, South, East, West. I have spoken with people from New Hampshire, Florida, Arizona, California, Washington, Chicago… as well as the Heartland, and they all very much appreciate the "Elderhostel" experience. This group of people are usually a cut above the "average" tourist in that they want to know more about the workings of Branson and how the industry operates. I have been privileged to be a part of the experience for these last few years- it makes me feel good knowing that I have had a hand in promoting the industry that supports my family and my career, and has shown me the audience that is responsive to the songs and music that are important to me. Thanks for your kind words!
Rod Phillips is a consummate entertainer that always connects with his audience regardless of age and regardless of musical preference. I've observed Rod in various settings over a period of 20 years from 1000 seat theaters to house concerts and everything in between. I've never seen him have an "off" performance or known of an audience that left unhappy. He can beautifully perform jazz, bluegrass, broadway, folk, gospel and country. He's considerate and easy to get along with. If you are looking for a crowd pleaser solo act, you need Rod Phillips.

Response from Rod Phillips:
Thank you, Hon. Nolen Berry. I think you could rely on a former judge to give an impartial and fair assessment! It would be an honor to open for the Sons of the Pioneers sometime, if you could find the right venue...just have to find a way to put 13 instruments in my saddlebags!

What to Expect
An engaging, entertaining, inspiring, warm, intimate, nostalgic, funny, and sometimes intriguing look into a life of music and contemplation of the mysteries and miracles of life-- and attempt to make some sense of it through music.
About
Music is my life experience and my life expression. All my life I have been writing and learning songs and instruments as a passion and presenting them in performance. The performances have taken many expressions, from the choral and classical music of my youth, through the pop and jazz in my 20s, through theater performances and traveling in the USA and abroad. I have friends and groups I play music with but am most at home performing solo. My music repertoire is very broad but is all related to Americana-- the American experience. A venue within driving range allows me to bring 13 instruments and allows me to finish with a finale of "An American Portrait", which is 13 songs in 13 minutes on 13 instruments. Concerts may contain many Rod Phillips songs, or an assortment of Americana. The tone of the concerts are warm, intimate, funny. My audiences are sometimes church organizations or youth, so they are always clean and classy in content.
Additional Booking Notes
I play many types of venues, indoors and out, so my stage set up needs vary. I like a stage set-up that gives me space to set up a number of instruments: If traveling by land and bringing 13 instruments, I would need a 10 X 16 foot stage space, electricity, and stage lighting. This gives me room for my harp, cello, dulcimer, and piano, plus a mic on a stand for the guitar, banjo, mandolin, flutes, sax, and harmonicas. If traveling by air, stage space could be as little as 8 X 8 feet, with the mic on a stand for the smaller instruments and piano. When flying to a venue, venue must provide sound system, a certified digital piano*, and stage lighting.* I provide a wireless mic and wireless guitar device.
*{Piano must be either an acoustic piano that is properly tuned and amplified (with at least two microphones) or a digital, weighted-action 88 key (most contemporary churches have this type of digital piano).}

Set List
(from Public Relations materials)
As a former New Christy Minstrel, Rod's folk roots are apparent in his choice of music. But Rod Phillips' performances most often feature his own songs, taken from eight songwriter CDs and music written over 4 decades. In his concerts, every song is introduced or framed with an interesting tale to accompany it. The result is an experience intimate and warm, drawing in the audience and placing them in the middle of the story or mood of the song... comments from the listeners often describe that the song felt like it was their own experience or emotion. Love songs "I Love You From the Inside Out" or "You Would See a Hero"; songs about the moving experiences of parenthood: "Blossoms of May" and "My Old Green Truck"; the struggles of trying to establish a career: "Star In My Eyes"... and meeting unusual people: "Hotsy Totsy Man" and "End of the Road" are memorable examples of his songwriting.
And then, at times, Rod Phillips has an astonishing reach into styles and eras of music. He can play classical piano (Bach, Rachmaninoff, Chopin), jazz standards, music from the Big Band era, the Great American songbook and rousing ballads in the Cowboy and Americana style; or will pick up a mandolin or banjo and strike up a mountain or Ozark tune, with stories about his "hillbilly" grandparents thrown in. The North Texas jazz experience is apparent in his improvising, and his ease and knowledge of the American musical repertoire is far-reaching also, from Lerner and Lowe to Rodgers and Hammerstein, Cole Porter, and George Gershwin. He played piano for "The Fantasticks" when he was 15 years old and then played the part of The Boy (Matt) at the age of 29; produced musicals, wrote original drama productions (The Christmas Lamb, Adobe Rabbit), and appeared as lead characters (H.M.S. Pinafore and The Fantasticks), danced (Fiddler on the Roof), directed the orchestra (Oliver) and reproduced electronic midi scores of Victor Herbert and Cole Porter musicals for performance. With all of this music to draw from, Rod Phillips often throws in a ditty from something, say, "Never Say No" from The Fantasticks, to lend a little lightness or color to the evening. His voice is a light, lyrical tenor that people often say is reminiscent of an Irish tenor... or John Denver. Understandable, since he starred and produced a John Denver memorial show for 3 seasons in Branson, Missouri. Also as a band member from 35 years ago for Michael Martin Murphey, he has a working knowledge of more MMM songs than anyone alive, other than perhaps Michael himself!
