Sean is a third-generation bagpiper with over a quarter century of his own piping experience.
Approximately two dozen University diplomas have ever been awarded in the field of bagpiping. Sean holds two of them:
Master of Music Performance, Carnegie Mellon University
Bachelor of Arts in Music Education, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania
He also holds the highest Professional Development Awards in Scottish Bagpipe Performance and Teaching accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority.
Whether produced for an audience of 1 or of thousands, Sean's performances are presented with utter assurance of quality and set an unprecedented standard for unforgettable memories.
Sean played for the graveside service for my husband and then during his celebration of life gathering He played in the beginning of the service, as he had promised, even though it was pouring down rain. Then he played Amazing Grace during the service and the pipes sounded so beautiful He later played lighter and more lively music and entertained my guests at the celebration. He was on time, very professional, exceptionally talented, and exceeded our expectations. I
My dad passed away somewhat unexpectedly. When planning his service, we thought about having a bagpiper. Trying to find one last minute who could capture how special my dad could have been a hard task. Sean responded right away and he was very kind in what we wanted. The way that he conducted himself and the beautiful bagpiping he did was perfect in honoring my dad. The process was very easy. I remember him walking up the hill at the cemetery and hearing the bagpipe fade as they were putting my dad to rest. It was so beautiful. Thank you so much Sean for what you did for my family. We could not have asked for a better person to honor our dad the way that you did. I will forever be grateful to you. I will highly recommend you for all bagpiping needs.
Response from Sean Patrick Regan Bagpiper:
Kate, you are very kind. I am always sorry to hear when a musician passes away, and I feel a particular honor in playing for their final departure. Thank you for including me as part of the day's remembrances.
Our late mother’s wish was that we hire a bagpiper to play at the graveside of her funeral service. We were unable to arrange something with any local pipers, so we used Gigsalad to find Sean. On very short notice, he not only drove two hours to the service on a very rainy morning, but he checked in with us about our request beforehand to ensure things went as we wanted. In addition, he did some research and turned up an extra tune (besides our mother’s two requests) which had a family connection that my mom would have loved. He played that song last, and—you decide if this was just a coincidence—the sun broke through the clouds at that moment and the rain stopped. We can’t recommend Sean highly enough!
Response from Sean Patrick Regan Bagpiper:
Thank you, Dan. What a day it was, and how pleasant for the rain to pause just when it did. I am glad everything lined up to allow me to play for you and your family. Be sure to find me and say hello if/when you attend the Ohio Scottish Gathering or Ligonier Highland Games!
Sean was fantastic. The booking process was easy and Sean communicated thoroughly and promptly with me (Parish Director of Music) to ensure every detail about the event was covered. Sean arrived early to warm up and then performed at not one, but two back-to-back Catholic Masses. Sean knows his craft. His performance was excellent, the day went flawlessly, and hundreds of people were thrilled. I would recommend Sean to anyone looking for a skilled, experienced piper.
Response from Sean Patrick Regan Bagpiper:
Hello Chris, thank you for including me as part of the occasion! I thoroughly enjoyed it, and even got to give a third performance as part of it (I went downstairs during the second service and played a bit for the kids, telling them about the history of Saint Patrick). If we do it again, I look forward to the possibility of fitting the third church of the parish into the morning's lineup; we just have to coordinate with Father Kevin. I did pass on your regards to him, by the way. Thank you, again.
The residents really enjoyed all the playing and information they gained from Sean.
Response from Sean Patrick Regan Bagpiper:
Thank you, Andrea. The crowd had some good questions, and those that I saw in the interval as well as at the end were very kind. I greatly enjoyed performing for your residents and was delighted to see their holiday spirit in my Saint Patrick's Week tour. My best to them all, as well as to yourself!
Sean Patrick was amazing and we cannot say enough about how he added to our special day! We 100% recommend him to anyone looking for authenticity and amazing bagpipe skills!
Response from Sean Patrick Regan Bagpiper:
Thank you, Jen. It was great fun working with you, and with DJ Adam, leading up to the occasion itself. And what a pleasant surprise to meet your friend who is also a bagpiper! Best wishes to you and John.
I would like to say Sean was excellent. We spoke a few times through emails and over the phone. He was always polite and very thorough. Since he played for my mother's funeral, he allowed us to make request and he let me know if he couldn't play a particular song. Again he helped make my mom's Homegoing Celebration memorable and his price was reasonable. I would recommend him for any event you may be having. My family and I were very blessed with his services. Thank you so much Sean.
Response from Sean Patrick Regan Bagpiper:
You are too kind, Cheryl. Your mother was clearly a well loved person, and it was an honor to play for her Homegoing Celebration. Thank you for including me in the day.
We were so blessed to have found Sean! Communication was always open and he quickly responded to any messages. He catered to our needs and was so kind and thoughtful during our difficult time mourning the loss of our grandmother. I would highly recommend him!
Response from Sean Patrick Regan Bagpiper:
Thank you, Allison. It was a lovely service for an amazing person, and a pleasure to play for her family.
We were honored to have Sean play at my Father's service. Communication was outstanding. Sean, thank you so so much. My dad would have loved hearing you play. You were simply amazing!
Thank you Sean for your professionalism. Performing at a funeral and wake couldn’t be easy but you were wonderful. The family and friends all commented how great the bagpipes were.
Response from Sean Patrick Regan Bagpiper:
Thank you, Brad. I felt immediately included as part of your kind and talented family, and I am glad to hear the music was well received. Please do stop by the Balmoral Pipes & Drums tent and say hello if you are able to attend the Edinboro or Ligonier Highland Games, in September. Until we meet again, best wishes to all!
Sean went over and above what was expected. I would recommend him without any hesitation. I did not have any idea what to do and his suggestions were spot on. He was professional, personal and quickly became a friend. His knowledge is extensive. Please ask him questions he will answer them gladly with some history of the bagpipes and the music. 10 stars
Response from Sean Patrick Regan Bagpiper:
It was a pleasure piping for your family, and a particular honor, knowing your mother's (and extended family's) history in Scottish Pipe Bands. Thank you for including me. If you ever come across the information pertaining to your grandfather's whereabouts April-June of 1943, please let me know; it is quite possible one of my ancestors saw yours in North Africa!
Mr. Regan did a wonderful job for our family. After getting a last-minute cancelation from someone else, Mr. Regan was willing to drive several hours to save the day for us! Great guy... great talent!
Response from Sean Patrick Regan Bagpiper:
Thank you, Jamie. I am sorry you had the stress of a cancellation put on you during an already difficult time, but I was glad to be able to ensure that your father was laid to rest to the sound of the pipes. I hope to play for you again someday, under happier circumstances!
Back in the 1980's Patrick came to our house in Manor Texas on Christmas Day - his performance, and the dancing by his wife Stacy was our Christmas gift to my parents. It was an awesome event and my parents talked of it for years afterwards. He was delightful. Another thank you, Patrick, 40 years later.
McArthurs were legendary pipers in Scotland. Wonder if you are a descendant??
Response from Sean Patrick Regan Bagpiper:
Thank you, Kathy! I can only take partial credit if the event took place in December 1988: I was born a couple of months prior to that, which I'm led to understand made Highland Dancing much easier for my mom, Stacey. My dad, Patrick, is back in Dallas now, so you might look him up for an encore performance!
All the best,
Sean Patrick
Sean is an amazing piper; and very engaging with the crowd. My whole party was blown away by his performance. We will be booking again. Highly recommended.
Sean,
Thank you so much. I’m just looking at Ron’s posts if our event and your performances. Outstanding job. I’m so glad you were a part of our very first event.
Will stay in touch. Hope to do it again.
Sean played for our daughter's wedding ceremony at the Walled Garden Mellon Park in Pittsburgh. He is an exceptional talent. His bagpipe sounds were such a wonderful enhancement to a beautiful day. We would highly recommend Sean.
He was awesome! Excellent entertainer and musician and delightful person to talk to and deal with. Highly recommend him!
Response from Sean Patrick Regan Bagpiper:
Thank you, Lee Ann! My best to you, Lynn, and Marian.
Sean
Sean did a great job! He showed up on time and was very friendly and accommodating to our guests taking photos, etc. Our guests loved it. We would definitely hire Sean again.
Response from Sean Patrick Regan Bagpiper:
Thank you for your kind review, Erin. Ryan, Miya, Caitlin, Savannah, David, and Brandon (DJ) were all very helpful over the course of the day, and the patrons all seemed to enjoy themselves as well. I hope to see you all again before too long!
Sean
Sean is a wonderful friend and talented musician. I had surprised my (now) husband with having Sean come all the way from Virginia (where he was living at the time last year) to perform at my wedding. We walked into our reception behind him playing Star Wars on the bagpipes, something I've always enjoyed listening to him play.
Response from Sean Patrick Regan Bagpiper:
It may seem strange, to some, but there is a great honor, and a unique privilege of an experience, as a performer, to play for persons at multiple key moments in their lives. I always enjoyed piping for you at the Renaissance Festival, and it was a great pleasure to be able to send you into the next stage of your lives together by playing at your wedding. Playing for you both in the final hours of his life was a truly moving experience. I am sorry I was unable to be present for his funeral, but I am glad he was able to hear the pipes one last time before moving on.
Sean Patrick Regan recently provided bagpipe music for my Mother's memorial service. The service was held at the Church of the Ascension in Pgh which provided marvelous acoustics for both organ and pipes.
Sean also played at the cemetery service.
Everyone who was at the service remarked at how well he was able to blend the pipes w/ the organ music and later at the cemetery.
The highlight of the service in the opinion of many was the blending of the church organ and bagpipes during the playing of Amazing Grace at the end of the service.
Thank you Sean for making a sad event not only uplifitng, but truly a celebration of life.
Sean was a Pipe & Drum instructor at my school for four years. Over the three that I knew him, he built the the group to be about a third of the school's attendees. He taught me Scottish Snare, along with a few other students. As a teacher, he is kind and patient, while keeping the group focused. I loved learning from him.
Sean Patrick played for our annual st pats party and was the highlight of the night for all! He was so patient with our young boys, arrived very early and played beautifully!! He even played in the rain as guests arrived. He was incredible! So thankful for his talented performance!! If you need a piper Sean is the only choice!
Sean exceeded all of my expectations! He kept everyone entertained and mesmerized with his amazing talent and fantastic stories! We plan on booking him again in the future.
Response from Sean Patrick Regan Bagpiper:
Thank you, Amy! Everyone was most gracious. It's always nice to have a lively crowd, especially at a wake, and the location was beautiful. I look forward to playing for you and yours again soon.
All the best,
Sean

Sean Patrick Regan is a third-generation piper. He started lessons at the age of 8 under the instruction of his father, Dr. Patrick Regan, who was the first person in the world to earn a degree in bagpiping (BFA-Carnegie Mellon University). Sean is the only person in the world to earn a Music Education degree with the bagpipe as the primary instrument (BAME-Edinboro University of PA), and one of only two persons to receive a Master of Music Performance (Bagpipes) from Carnegie Mellon University. A musician with over 40 different instruments under his belt, he has entertained audiences at home and abroad for over 25 years.
Sean began his formal study of the Scottish arts as a highland dancer at the age of four. He continued as a competitive dancer until he turned 13, when he decided to more actively pursue competitive piping and drumming. His band experience began with the Steel Thistle Pipes & Drums of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he played as a piper and snare drummer in grades V, IV and III. He also played snare with the Carnegie Mellon University Grade III Pipe Band, and was a member of the midsection of the Carrick High School Pipes & Drums in Grade V competition. During his time as a student at Edinboro University, Sean expanded his performance and musical background by joining the Great Lakes Grade II Pipe Band of Cleveland, Ohio piping with them at the North American Championships and winning the Midwest and Canadian Pipe Band Championships. While at Edinboro University, Sean played in over 200 performances, and earned recognition through countless academic and competitive awards. He graduated Summa Cum Laude as the Outstanding Music Major of his class, and was inducted into the National Music Honor Society.
Sean moved into the Grade I bracket of the EUSPBA in 2008, but his solo competition career was put on hold when he began to pursue his teacher education. In 2007 and 2008 he taught as a guest instructor of the Bluebonnet School of Scottish Bagpiping and Drumming, and in 2009 he taught as a guest instructor for the College of Piping, in Glasgow. In 2012 he directed and taught at the small but well-received Edinboro Scottish Arts Summer Camp.
Also in 2012, Sean returned to solo competitive piping, winning Piper of the Day at the Alma Highland Festival and at the College of Wooster Piping and Drumming Competition. He finished the year by winning six 1st-places in seven events sanctioned by the World Online Piping and Drumming Championships, which made him the highest-scoring competitor in the world, and amounted to one-fifth of the total points earned by the United States that year. In 2013, Sean graduated from Edinboro and accepted the position of Director of Music at Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock, Virginia. He ended that year ranked 7th out of 73 Grade I competitors in the eastern United States. The 2014 and 2015 seasons progressed with numerous awards, culminating in the 2015 United States Piping Foundation where Sean took 1st in the Piobaireachd and 2nd in the MSR events, earning him the Grade I aggregate title (and shiny silver belt buckle!). During that time, Sean also played with the Greater Richmond Grade III Pipe Band and the Peel Regional Police Grade I Pipe Band.
At the end of 2015 Sean received confirmation of having successfully passed the Level 8 and Piping Teacher certification exams from the Piping and Drumming Qualifications Board, and was upgraded to Professional solo competition. He ended the 2016 competitive season ranked 10th of 133 Professional competitors in the eastern United States.
Sean worked for four years as the Director of Music at Massanutten Military Academy, where the Pipe Band was the primary school ensemble, building the program from five members to over 30 in a school with a population of only 100 students. In 2017 he returned to Pittsburgh and began instructing the Balmoral Pipes & Drums, ending the 2018 seasons and 2019 seasons at the top of their grade. Also in 2017, he joined and began performing with The Rogues, "America's Celtic Band," and is featured on their 25th Anniversary Album, "25... and LIVE!"
In 2018 he accepted the position of Pipe Band Director at Edinboro University, where he taught until 2023. Between the Edinboro and Balmoral Pipe Bands, Sean ran over 130 band practices online during the pandemic. He also taught hundreds of lessons by Zoom; having begun teaching online some ten years earlier, it was not as jarring a transition for him as it was for some. He ended the 2020 season ranked 3rd in the solo standings for the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association.
Today, Sean perform locally and nationally, and teaches piping and drumming in-person and via remote instruction. He also continues to serve through the Balmoral School of Piping & Drumming, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit tax-exempt corporation which produces education- and entertainment-oriented events, both online and in person, for students and audiences of all ages and ability levels.
For most events, no additional amplification is needed.
