Shantytown, a folk/rock band specializing in original songs and ballads, and versions of cover songs from a wide and eclectic range of musical styles. Organic harmonies and multi-talented performers with years of experience make Shantytown an experience to be remembered. The band's core members are Kirk Banner, on guitar and vocals; Buddy Seagraves, on guitar, bass, mandolin, vocals; Dave Zimmer, percussion and vocals; Fred Buck, keyboards, accordion and vocals; Paula McWhirter-Buck, vocals, and Ron Johnson, lyricist, sound engineer, and debonair man-about-town.
These folks have been playing together, in various combinations, for 40-odd years...some years have been more odd then others....
I had the pleasure of interviewing Shantytown before the end of 2019, and I gotta say that was one of the best most wholesome times I've had in our Studio AVL. Shantytown has vivid and evocative lyrical wit, along with that pensive porch playing that we all know and love from great Americana. "Whisper" is possibly my favorite, and an especially pensive song. It's not all deep thoughts and rocking chairs though, they have plenty of jams that will kick you out of your seat, and make you jig along to the mandolin solos.
If you want to get a preview and hear some stories, find the interview and acoustic performance in Studio AVL at 981theriver.com. I highly recommend this band.
