n a blistering winter night, the temperature hovering at thirty degrees Celsius, the music of Loreena McKennitt playing softly, in a small living room facing La Baie’s imposing fjord, in Quebec’s Saguenay region, Shella-Ann arrived into this world—accompanied by immense moths that burst forth from their cocoons in the cold and began to flutter around the apartment to greet the newcomer.
A daughter of late nights steeped in traditional Quebecois song, bluegrass, a mixture of soul and world music, she learned to read music before she could read words, and as a five-year-old had already won prizes and accolades for her technique. From early childhood she began to wander in the wings at concerts, and felt at home backstage. Over the course of years of travel, and having grown in a relatively spiritual environment, she came to dream of a world without borders and developed an affinity for cultural crossbreeding. Driven by a love of learning, free exchange, and history, she found in music a medium that allowed her to point to the injustices and inequalities that plague us currently, and the ones on the horizon.
Shella-Ann is a multi-instrumentalist, the daughter of a percussionist, a self-taught harmonist, a singer, guitarist, and singer-songwriter, and she was quickly encouraged to pursue composition. From her first word, the violin was her implement of choice, and she began studies in song composition and traditional Quebecois music, with the violin as her principal instrument and the guitar as her secondary. Surrounded and supported by great mentors—Daniel Mongrain, Philip Drolet, Gary Antonio, Claude Pépin, Eric Beaudry, and Eric Favreau, among many others—she was schooled in the art of arrangement, digital composition, and orchestration.
Inspired by the nonprofit organization Jeunes Musiciens du Monde, which offers disadvantaged youth the opportunity to express themselves through music, Shella-Ann became involved in that project and others. She’s developed and delivered beginner sound and harmony workshops in traditional music schools, on an extracurricular basis, at day camps, and in other contexts where what society calls “complex cases” reside. She has also done humanitarian work for nonprofit organisms, social service centers, homes for youth and for seniors, collectives, soup kitchens, and numerous festivals.
Recently returned from a seven-month backpacking journey, she’s come back with a clear vision for reuniting the arts and the world’s myriad borders, with a strong belief in the strength of the masses. She passionately participates in and is trying to develop events focused on raising consciousness, bringing together the causes of climate change, women’s rights, and cultural recognition. Using her music, she’s assigned herself the mission of creating openings via a subversive universe in which song helps to reshape us, every being enveloped in self-love and this link that binds each of us to each other
