Steel Away, Inc.

Clients can expect Steel Away representative(s) to arrive 45 minutes to an hour before performance time.

Band will be completely set up 15 - 30 minutes before the start of the event.

The first set is one hour long, followed by a 20 minute break. Subsequent sets are 40 minutes in length.

On events shorter than 2 hours, no break will be taken.

Clients are encouraged to inform band leader of any planned speeches, announcements or presentations so that that breaks can be coordinated to coincide with those down times.

Steel Away members will never join a buffet line or approach the bar unless specifically invited to do so by the host or hostess.

Steel Away originated as a husband/wife steel drum ensemble in 1993. It’s co-founders are native Trinidadians, Fitzroy “Fox” Alleyne and Gail Clarke-Alleyne.

Fox began playing at elementary school level and represented his school in competition for the first time when he was eleven years old. His high school S.E.P.O.S., was frequently in winners' row on the Schools’ Panorama and Music Festival circuit in the eighties.

Gail was groomed by the well-known steel drum guru, McDonald “Sonny” Redhead. She also represented her school as a member of the St. Francois Girls’ College Steel Orchestra in both the Schools’ Panorama and Musical Festival competitions. S.F.G.C. emerged victorious in both events in 1981 and 1983 respectively.

The couple met in 1985 when they were both members of the world-famous Trinidad All Stars and competed in the National Panorama and Music Festival competitions with Trinidad All Stars Steel Orchestra. They also performed at band’s biannual concerts, Classical Jewels and toured the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. In 1987 they joined the cultural entourage, Showboat and performed at Disney World in Orlando, FL and at Disneyland in Anaheim CA.

Steel Away is currently based in Miramar, Florida and is a popular choice for weddings, corporate events, such as conferences, dinners, dinner cruises and private affairs, such as birthday parties, graduations, picnics, et cetera.

Steel Away evolved into a family band as the couple's three children all became involved and performed with the band over the years. However, these days, the family's youngest member, Kobie, is undoubtedly the one that is poised to lead the band into the future. With Kobie at its helm, Steel Away is the only ensemble that can truly claim to uniquely bridge the gap between the best of the current generation and generations past, while still embracing the beautiful tonal quality of the only instrument invented in the 20th century. The group’s repertoire features a sampling of a wide variety of music.

Steel Away needs access to an electrical outlet.

The steel drums and electrical equipment need to be protected from the elements, so a tent or overhang would be necessary to cover the band.

If playing on a beach, please provide a hard, level surface to place on the sand before the equipment can be set up.
