I am an electric bass player who has been working for decades in the Chicago music scene, but recently moved to the Tampa, FL area. My favorite styles include R&B, Pop, Funk, Jazz, Latin & Caribbean. I'm comfortable in both live and studio settings. I can read music, including full notation, chord charts, and Nashville Charts.
Steve King is a great person to work with. He stepped in with our band for a recording session and was prepared with the original modern jazz tunes we recorded. He is a welcome addition to the gigs we have played together and I look forward to working with him in the future. If you need a creative, solid musician and person I highly recommend Steve.
Steve is highly professional and I expect him to play quality theatre shows.
Steve has the perfect blend of great technical skills, clean sound, powerful amp, ability to read difficult charts, wonderful solos, tight groove, hard work ethic, fun stage presence, and nice guy! He’s comfortable in all musical genres. Hire Steve on electric bass for sure!
Response from Steve King:
Thanks for the kind words Mark! Love playing with you guys - look forward to doing it again when you’re back in town!
Steve has got to be one of the best players that I have ever had the privilege to work with. He reads and can play any style you throw at him. From funky to jazz, Steve can handle it. The Chicago market is one of the most competitive markets to be a musician in and Steve is always booked when he comes to town. On top of that, Steve is a top notch guy with a wonderful personality! Chicago is going to miss you and your talent very much! I wish you much luck in Florida Steve! You really don't need it!
I have known and worked with Steve for the past 10 years and he is a wonderful and talented Bassist!
My band Michael Walters Orchestra in the Chicago area have hired Steve to play with all our groups and he is the consummate professional! Always cooperative and easy to work with. He plays so many styles of music at extremely at a high level . Shows up on time and never a question if he’ll be prepared. If your lucky enough to hire Steve you won’t be disappointed. Good luck Steve with your next chapter of making down in the Tampa area!

Can a musician be overqualified? The short answer is no, but regardless of the gig, you won't find a more talented, experienced and responsible bassist than Steve. Proficient in just about any style, be it jazz, funk, rock or blues. Steve is also an excellent reader in either clef and can even provide vocals when needed. His sound on stage is always dynamically articulate, clean and clear thanks to advanced techniques and top shelf pro gear.
Steve always shows up prepared, well dressed and professional in every aspect of a gig. A true pro

If you hire me, you can expect a number of things...
Professionalism: I will be a timely and precise communicator. I will show up early for the rehearsal or gig. I will be as prepared as I'm able to given time constraints and/or prep materials provided to me.
You will have a groove: The bass, along with the drums, are the foundation of any band. As a recovering drummer, I combine the rhythmic groove and timing of percussion, while laying down a foundation for the rest of the band.
I will watch and listen: I'm attentive to the bandleader, vocalists, and others in the band.
Steve grew up on the east coast, influenced by a broad variety of genres, and from an early age played piano, drums, guitar, then finally picking up the musical love of his life – the electric bass guitar. During college, Steve performed with Jay Leno, Red Skelton, Diane Schuur, and jazz greats Bobby Shew, Frank Mantooth, Rob McConnell, Steve Houghton, and many others.
Steve spent decades gigging with hundreds of different bands, artists, leaders, and configurations, throughout the Chicago area, including Bill Archer's Big Bear Band, which became Big Fun, The Michael Walters Orchestra, and others. Steve still performs with his R&B, jazz and Funk band from college, State of Mind. Steve also stays busy with studio work, and performing with a variety of local artists and band leaders.
Steve has been called to be a side man for many national performers, including Chuck Berry, Martha and the Vandellas, The Drifters, The Platters, The Coasters, and others.
Steve is comfortable with styles ranging from R&B, jazz, fusion, funk, blues rock, Latin, big band, to Motown.

I've been influenced by so many styles and instrumentalists over the years. However, as a bass player, there are no two more influential than Richard Patterson from Chicago (went on to play with Miles Davis), and Marcus Miller. 'Nuff said....
I will bring everything needed for the gig
