My performances consist of a high energy, hype show filled with worship and truth. Alot of crowd participation and great entertainment keeping the crowd alive and LOUD, lifting Jesus high! I believe us as artist are there to serve as Jesus came to serve. My mindset is to come serve to the best of my ability and give the supporters my all.
After graduating high school, Steven Malcolm was at a standstill. With no job and no money, the biggest part of his week was a rap group where he would party, rap, and sleep with different women every other night. On the outside he may have looked satisfied, but on the inside, he felt like life was just passing by. In his own words, he was “heading nowhere.”
Like many other young people, Steven had to cope with struggles at home even as he was trying to grow up and find a sense of self. He had no father figure as a child, and his mother often struggled with a drinking problem. So as a teenager, he sought a connection the only place he could find: to people outside his family. To women. Steven says, “To fill the void in my heart, I slept with every attractive lady I came across. The more women I slept with, the more important I felt. But it was a false sense of worth.”
One afternoon, a girl he was seeing invited Steven to church. He admits that he wasn’t that excited at first, saying “Honestly, I had nothing better to do that night. So I went.” But once he got to The Edge, an urban Hip Hop church in Grand Rapids, MI, he saw “a bunch of guys who looked like me, dressed like me, talked like me. I felt comfortable. And once Pastor Troy began to speak, then the Holy Spirit showed up.”
Steven continues, “Ever since that first visit, I had to go back. Every time I was at church I felt worth like I’ve never felt before. A joy that is unexplainable. God was beginning to show me where my worth is – in Him.”
Steven reports that life with Christ now is better than he thought it could ever be. He feels joy like he never did in his past, when he was seeking love in empty encounters. He says “I don’t have to turn to sex to feel worth something now. Instead, I live to serve and inspire others.”
Steven now serves at The Edge on a weekly basis. As a member of a worship group called the Elements Team, he uses his gift of music to glorify God and to show how Christianity can be used in Hip Hop culture. He’s currently attending Grand Rapids Community College with a major in Criminal Justice. In 2013, Steven’s first mix tape, called Real Hip Hop, was released with great success. He has performed at several large events and has opened up for artists like Lecrae, Andy Mineo, George Moss, Yaves, and Trip Lee. He says, “God has called me to do music. Putting my delight in the Lord got me where I am today, living the desires of my true heart.”
