I am a storyteller of the spoken tradition, I enchant audiences by allowing them to experience a story in the oldest form possible. There is no fourth wall in storytelling, but a fourth window, so the audience and I can interact directly and experience the story together.
In my programs for children and all ages, I increase the amount of interaction. I introduce myself and invite them to tell the story with me through a call & response. While not fluent in American Sign Language (ASL), I include ASL and movements to make the stories visually, auditorily, and kinetically interactive for the children. I often include character development lessons within the story ("be kind," "be brave," etc) so that the children are learning lessons that can serve them for a lifetime -- although they usually don't realize they're learning. They're too busy having fun!
I specialize in folktales, personal narratives, original stories, and historical stories. Whether in a program for children or adults, I tell stories to encourage laughter, wisdom, and inspiration for my audiences.
Misty Mator has been a professional Story Artist and storyteller for over ten years. She has performed for the Women's Storytelling Festival in D.C., Debut: A Fusion of Storytelling and Play, the Beaver Tales Storytelling Festival, amongst numerous other venues. She also has conducted workshops for groups such as Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School in Midland, PA, the national organization Story Crossroads, and she was a founding member of TELL: Pittsburgh Storytelling Series. Audiences have called her performances “brilliant,” “enchanting,” and that “Every gesture, every expression, all made [the] story come alive!” Misty draws on her study of traditional myths and her experience as a mother-of-four to entertain, educate, and amuse audiences of all ages.
For Indoor Programs for Children:
My shows include a lot of movement, for both the teller and the audience. Please be sure to have your students seated so that they can potentially move their arms and legs comfortably without knocking into each other (roughly six inches in front and either side of them, no need for exact measuring, but no elbow-to-elbow spacing please). Please also give me at least a five-by-five foot area to work in at the front of the audience.
Please have someone meet me and take me to where you would like me to wait until it is time to begin. This space should also allow access to a mirror and restroom facilities. After the children are seated, I will enter and begin the storytime. Please have teachers present for the storytime to assist any students as needed during the performance. Once the storytime is over, I will bid the children farewell and exit.
