For my lifetime, music has been with me. With various jobs and career moves, music has always been a constant, along with acting, teaching and leading for formal and informal opportunities. With an Alzheimer's certification in The Gems program and working with many adults, children & seniors with cognitive challenges over 20 years, we now know how integral music is!! It is the ONLY activity that uses the entire brain at one time. Your voice is a universal instrument. Here's what happens when you sing and/or make music:
1. Dopamine (The Reward Chemical) Singing or just listening to music you love can stimulate dopamine release. This neurotransmitter is linked to pleasure and motivation, giving you that euphoric high when you hit a powerful note or complete a creative idea.

2. Endorphins (The Natural Painkiller) Singing has been shown to boost endorphins. These chemicals reduce pain and promote a sense of euphoria. This is part of why choir singers often report feeling uplifted and energized after rehearsal.
3. Oxytocin (The Bonding Hormone) Jamming with others or even connecting emotionally through your music can release oxytocin. This hormone fosters feelings of trust, connection and social bonding; a big reason why communal music -making feels so powerful.
