We don't just put on a show... we put you in the show!
Founded in 1971, the Swampgrass Jug-band performs acoustic roots music - string band, jug band, bluegrass and original music that lends itself to participation, and FUN!
MUSICAL PERFORMANCE
We can create the mood with background music, mesmerize an audience by filling the room with humor and energy, or anything in between.
JOIN A JUG BAND
We can provide "edutainment" that engages kids, adults (or both) in making music, while learning about instruments, songs and styles. We start with a performance, demonstrate how to play kazoos, jugs and washboards, then coach some lucky volunteers who get to perform along side the band.

- We enjoy ourselves, like to have fun and get folks involved
- Our 5 man band features a variety of musical instruments and influences and most of us sing and take turns in front, keeping things fresh and interesting
Donald Bowen - banjo, guitar, washboard
Doug Bowen - guitar, hammered dulcimer, musical saw, jug
Dave Rubin - guitar, resonator guitar, mouth harp, jews harp
Jeff Tyler - mandolin, fiddle, ukelele, kazoo
Jim Vasconcellos - upright base, washtub base, wisecracks
- We have seen and done it all, and know how to make your occasion fondly memorable - concerts, festivals, schools, libraries, cultural and campus events, corporate meetings, private parties, house concerts, park openings, fundraisers, radio, TV, weddings, funerals, we can prepare a special song for a guest of honor and get them into the act, and yes, we also can teach barn dances, play the music and call the dances
The Swampgrass Jug-band has been entertaining East Coast audiences since 1971, always creating new acoustic music rooted in New Jersey. Much of our 80+ song repertoire of jug band, string band, bluegrass and good time music are originals.
In addition to doing concerts, we also offer education... If you are searching for a unique, intimate, participatory experience, our JOIN A JUG BAND could be just the ticket. In this interactive program for kids, adults or both, we teach everybody a little bit about the history of jug band music and then coach a few lucky members of the audience to play washboard, kazoo or jug and actually perform with our band.
Our un-amplified, acoustic sound is quite mezmerizing for intimate events, when we get up front and personal with our audience.
For larger groups, we employ a Bose L-1 sound system, with wireless instrument mikes so we are free to roam.
