Tawn P is a hip-hop artist in Houston, Texas. Not only does she rap, but she sings, produces, and makes beats. Few artists in hip-hop are able to create music that can rise above expectations and defy categorization like Tawn P, easily making her one of the most vital and flexible artists of her generation.
She has opened shows for many well known artists throughout the music industry. Tawn P knows how to command a crowd no matter what song she is singing or rapping. When it comes to hiring a female emcee it gets no better than Tawn P!
Me and my boyfriend decided that we would go to this new Live music spot on Sundays. We happened to go so we could hear the Live Out Loud band and to our surprise when we arrived we heard them playing but this new voice and face that was singing along with them on stage had everyone on their feet! So me and my guy got comfy in our section and enjoyed the sounds of Tawn P! She performed songs by Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Frank Ocean, etc...then she performed some of her own songs. It was amazing!
I went to SXSW this year for the first time in Austin. I knew that Tawn P would be performing and I had heard that her energy is crazy and she really knows how to put on a show. As she began performing you could see other people stopping and staying for a listen. The performance was outside and once she did her set the crowd still wanted to more. She's a great artist and I hope she comes back to SXSW next year!

Few artists in hip-hop are able to create music that can rise above expectations and defy categorization like TP, easily making her one of the most vital artists of her generation. Born and raised in Port Arthur, TX (home to the legendary duo UGK) and honing her skills as an artist miles away in Houston, Tawn-P has been on a constant grind ever since she released her 2006 debut mixtape The Tawn-P Project. Still developing as an MC/singer along with learning more about the business, TP would take a small hiatus. During this short break, she would work with producers Cameron Wallace (Beyonce’s “Upgrade You” featuring Jay-Z”) and Tim Ned (“Chuck Taylors”) along with doing some feature work with local artist.
Accumulating everything she learned during her time out of the spotlight, TP would release her mixtape Power in late 2008. Around that time, she would also audition for a spot on the world famous Apollo and eventually win a trip to Harlem. Wowing the crowd with her rendition of Reberta Flack’s classic song “Killing Me Softly,” TP would gain more fans and followers.
TP later moved to New York hoping to expand her audience. Through a mutual friend, she would even have the opportunity to singing in front of record executives gaining a small buzz throughout the industry outside of performing.
As hard financial times came upon the up-and-coming artists, she would relocate back to Houston hoping to gain her footing but not without what she learned from her eight month stay in New York. Various performances throughout Houston would help form her undeniable buzz throughout the city, leading to her breakout mixtape The Wake-Up Kiss. The Wake-Up Kiss became so critically acclaimed, that The Houston Press claimed that TP “set the standard for female MCs in Houston” along with it getting runner-up by the publication for best mixtape of (link hidden)is would led to opening for artists like Grammy Award winning singer Anthony David, groundbreaking hip-hop collective The Roots, Devin The Dude, and much more. With sharp lyricism, fierce delivery, and animated performances, Tawn-P’s proves that music can have both style and substance.
