Hey All! I am a jazz musician (saxophonist) located in Ann Arbor who is looking for gigs in Michigan. I have a couple jazz combos that play hard-bop, swing, blues, bossa, Latin jazz, funk, etc. which I would love to have play at weddings, house parties, and any other events that require music. My group and I all study jazz at the University of Michigan, under such greats as Benny Green and Bob Hurst. Group size can vary from trio to sextet to meet clients' needs. Rates are negotiable. The Jonathan Lynn Group was very professional. They were on time (actually they were early), well prepared and sounded great. You can schedule them with confidence for your event!
We booked the Jonathan Lynn Group for a series of events at two locations for grand opening weekends within retail stores. For the dates where I requested they text me when they arrived on location I never received any communication or information from them confirming their arrivals. For the one date where I was able to be on site they arrived after the start time for the event (6:05 for an event starting at 6pm) after I'd requested they arrive in time to be set up and playing at the start of the event. Though they were very quick to get loaded in and playing, the stress of not having music at the start of a very important event was unpleasant. I then reiterated my request for them to text me for the following 2 dates when they arrived, and received no such texts.
If you are able to stay on top of communication and arrival times with this band, their music was absolutely fantastic. Easily one of the best sounding bands we've hired (Which is why I'm giving them 4 stars rather than 2 or 3 for the late arrival and communication issues). Not sure I'll be able to use them again in the future due to the issues with communication and arrival times however.

Our band showed up at 5:58pm and we were able to start playing right at 6pm. It was a little frantic when setting up but we were not late. For the other events, we were there with plenty of time to set up even if a confirmation text was not sent. My apologies for not sending a text. Playing at total wines and working with Sarah was a pleasure. I hope we can continue working together for future events.
This was the perfect low-key jazz music I wanted for my wedding reception. It really helped liven up the room for our wedding which we scheduled quite early (12pm). Very professional and sounded fantastic. Thank you!

Punctuality, low maintenance, and quality performance. Audiences always leave happy from one of our performers, from children to the elderly. We can perform jazz, funk, soul, blues, latin jazz, bossa, and anything else that will want you to get on your feet and move to the beat! We have to ability to blast for in front of a large audience but also the control to play super quietly in a small room. It's most important to remember our versatility and professionalism as musicians.
Jonathan Lynn, an Ann Arbor townie, is an up and coming artist in the jazz world. As a jazz and classical saxophonist he studies with Andrew Bishop at the UofM where he improves his skills as a musician, improviser, and band leader. Jonathan started playing classical piano at the age of eight and has loved music ever since.
As a highschooler, Jonathan won many awards and competitions. Some of which include the Downbeat Student Music Award for "Outstanding High School Combo", "Best Soloist" at WMU jazz festival, Pioneer High School Concerto Competition, and Washtenaw Community Band Concert Competition. Additionally, he has played in the MSBOA All-State Jazz Band and MSBOA Michigan Youth Arts Jazz Band each two times.
Now in college, he plays lead alto in the UM Jazz Lab Ensemble and in various small groups at the university. He values being professional and punctual with all whom he works with.
The only requirement for performances is a wall outlet or power source. Jonathan's ensembles are no maintenance and supply all of their own gear. If there is a piano available at the space they will use that but if not, the ensemble playing will use an electronic keyboard. As far as dress, the ensemble can wear anything from casual to black tie, completely at the discretion of the Client.
